18-8 Stainless Steel Bolts
Is there any known problem with using stainless bolts when reassembling an outboard engine. With certain bolts being exposed to water it seems this would help with removal later especially is anti seize is used.

...Times Two. All the saltwater pro's have been using a product called Tef-Gel, ever since Ultra-Safety Systems came up with it, years ago. www.TefGel.com I always bought it in volume from them direct. But, places like West Marine, Boat Owners Warehouse, Overtons, E-bay, etc...also have it. Little dab will do ya.

Also, friction between stainless and aluminum such as cranking down a bolt, will actually weld the two together. I'd stick with hardened bolts.

I've had good luck using pipe dope as a marine antiseize...just watch your torque values...most torque values are specified with clean dry threads...adding any kind of lube will increase clamp force for a given torque value....use your judgement

Times 3 !!
Years ago (25-30) I used to use Never Seize on all my saltwater motors. And had poor results, didn't really know why. I was in the habit of pulling my LU apart every other year to lube the carrier...used never seize...They were always hard to get apart. Finally had one I couldn't separate and it had a crack along the oring line back on the exterior of the LU.
Took it to a machine shop that did work for the place I wrenched at. An old WWII vet welder got it apart welded the split and told me never to use never seize in salt water, asked why his short answer was lead/stainless/aluminum in salt water set up an electrolysis that mimicked a battery discharge..
Not sure if his explaination was correct, but I switched to a quality grease and had no issues from then on.

P.S. Still use it on car and truck work where the like is needed...James H. W2F a V-King... Want 2 Fly a V-King
