Reliable 300X
What is the modification level of 2005 300X where reliabilty is diminished? And who would you have build a modified one?

Todd D. here on the board has modified them a bunch, DBR and Simon have some making over 400, and there are several others. If you put a stroker crank in them, they are rumored to make 370 or so with no porting changes. If you watch the video of Kurts stroker, you get an idea of what they can do https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Ij-KtZ0XlA.

I have a 300x Stroker, just wondered what options and opinions of others that have been down this road.

I had a friend that added Simon heads and ECU for added RPM to his.
Other than the additional R's, wasn't much there and started having issues.
IMO, stock, might be best of the best.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Lot of people say a stock 300x is a time bomb . The most reliable thing to do is buy a 300xs with wty .
Now that we got that out of the way .
I've fixed a few 3.0L blocks that have had holes poked thru them. Every single one of them stuck a piston . 5 said go , 1 said **** no . Guess which won the battle ?
I sent $5000 dollars to a big name rod maker . I asked for a rod that was strong enough that when or if a piston stuck that it would just stall the motor out . Go home knock the dead soldier out of the hole , hone-n-hang a new player , fatten it up and go again . 10 weeks later they sent my money back and said "no thanks" .
Moral of the story , don't stick a piston .
Dirty filters and injectors , poor quality gas , or in my case getting stupid on the adjustable pressure regulator ...
Deal with the above , and it will be very reliable .
I have a set of red anodized heads here . Most of the removable chambers are cracked between the chamber and water side . maybe they detonated , maybe just the poor machining (stress risers) or a little of both .
I'll have to let ya know how the new chamber design works out ..
A 3.0L is actually an honest 3000 cc's
A 3.2L is a little short , you have to go .015 over to get to 3200 cc's
As far as big bore stuff goes , it it chicken bone's a rod , it wont be from piston area . It would be from sticking a piston , just like the rest . In the race car , I changed rod's every 75 to 100 passes . In the 3.4 and 3.6 L builds , I think it's wise to start with new rods . prep them as any other hi-stress part . Take advantage of the gucci friction reducing coatings that are out there , and replace them along with rod bearings , and a new top ring every 300 hours , and enjoy an "honest" hold it WFO for miles 375+ HP powerhead ....
We could talk billet reed blocks etc. etc. etc. ... but I gotta go open the shop in 10 minutes

Great info Chaz.
Been meaning to start a thread on the life and times of the 300X.
Heard plenty of the 2nd hand time bomb stories but had a friend up here buy one new and I think he told me has smart craft showed 1300 gals through it before he added the Simon stuff and started having problems.
As I recall too it was coincidence w/the Simon stuff being screwed on but not the cause.
I rode in his Mirage many times and thought it was the bench mark for what a lake boat could be.
That motor just did everything right and I wanted one.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

This one is a properly set up bone stocker--not too bad...I agree with Charlie that they need good clean fuel delivery and its not coming from the pump off the street. It is unreal how much moisture this pump fuel that we are being sold contains and attracks. (Do the glass jar test yourself)-
I have a stroked version, 2 stock ones, and a stroker XS with X dressings. There is no question that I like them.
