Blackmax is overcharging - Stator?
Hey guys, I have a 1983 Mercury 200 Blackmax and it is overcharging. Last summer I replaced the rectifier, that lasted about 2 minutes before I am guessing it popped and then voltage went up to 16-17 volts at speed. At idle-1500 RPM, voltage is normal, around 13-14. I am thinking it is the stator but am not sure. The stator is maybe 5 years old, CDI I think with very low hours (under 10). Boat runs great, but I cannot think of any other reason why it would be over charging other than a bad stator and the rectifer cannot handle the load. Thoughts?

Sounds like you need the voltage regulator that connects to the rectifier.

Regulators (part 88825A7) didn't show up until later models 1986 or so.....it will work.

CDI 16 amp stators have internal regulators. Rectifiers don't control voltage, they only "convert" the voltage to DC. 16-17 volts on a normal sized marine battery is not a big deal. I'd start to worry if it was running 18+ at speed, but being a 16 amp that's unlikely even if the regulator chit the bed. Most guys who swap from the 9 amp run 16s with no regulator at all.

Beside making sure you have the right battery, Check all your connection, that may be your issue frying rectifiers. My old 2.4 225 would run just under 18 v at WOT. I never had an issue.

The batteries are Interstate Deep Cycle, standard wet cell battery. They are 1 year old. All connections are good and tight.
I think I've discovered my problem... I am 95% sure I have a 16 amp stator on the motor and it is frying the rectifiers. I will be confirming tonight. CDI said if I install their regulated rectifier (193-5081 since I have a tach) it will solve the issue if this is the case as it is popping the 9a rectifier.1973 Tahiti 16' Torino (16' Super Sidewinder Clone)
