300xs spark plug problems
Got an 2014 300xs, at about 20 hours #4 plug came out and 3 other plugs were about to fall out, only held in with a few threads. Dealer checked the plug holes and put new plugs back in and torqued them like the service manual says to. Now at about 80 hours #4 plus came back out. Should I push for the dealer to replace the head? What would cause this? Thanks

I would have them look for the real problem. The only times I have ever seen spark plugs come loose was due to detonation.

How does detonation cause plugs to come out? Not doubting, just curious.....

Wow, that is a cool read. Thanks for the info. Who would have thought it could happen?
Chad r, what do the plugs look like when they have come out? New heads at the very least would be my request from merc. I am going to see my bud who is a merc tech in the am, I will ask if he has seen or knows about this....

Just talked with my tech bud. Never seen this happen with his 10+ yrs of merc repairs. Threads are stripped or plugs not installed properly was his only answer. A ddt should show a fault if the computer has detected detonation...

But more likely, it's NOT detecting it or not at a low enough level; which would be why the plugs are backing out.
The sensitivity of the knock sensor depends (partly) on how tightly it's screwed into the block... if it's not tight enough it won't be as sensitive (but the sensor could be bad, too).
If it was knocking badly it probably would have come apart by now.

Sounds like it's time for some contact with the merc tech line for the OP. Or his dealer/tech.

I don't think 300xs has knock sensor.

I'm curious, how do they manage to have independent knock control for each cylinder without a knock sensor?
The new Propulsion Control Module (PCM) 07 microprocessor features a fuel calibration unique to the 300XS. The calibration, combined with the race-bred combustion chamber design, results in the engine producing peak power for a longer period of time at the upper rpm operating range. The PCM 07 optimizes fuel, spark timing and knock control for each cylinder independently, enhancing engine running quality and performance.
