22ft pontoon boat motor.. What would be most reliable?
In-laws looking for new pontoon boat. 22 ft or so. I know nothing about the new motors. Probably in the 90-150 hp range. Looking for reliability .I have been impressed by friends E-tec. Should I consider both 2 or 4 strokes. Limited to Yamaha,Merc or Omc wouldn't know where to find a Suzuki dealer. Any recommendations and anything to avoid would be appreciated. Not a thread to run down any brand just don't want headaches in the future.

The new Merc 115 and 150 4 strokes are amazing.
Would work well there.

The first thing to consider is: if you need service, how close is the servicing dealer? Consider this: there are not as many full-line Evinrude dealers around. If you are on vacation and you need urgent service, you will drive by at least 5 or 6 Merc dealers before you will find an EVinrude dealer. Same problem with the Suzuki and Hondas.

We have a 22' Bennington with a 4 stroke 115 Merc. It is a few years old where Yamaha built the powerheads for the boat. I would go with more HP if you want to pull skiers but ours is a three over sized tubes with the side structure to get the boat to plane and it will run 32MPH GPS. Sips gas. On second 25 gal fillup and we use that boat every weekend. I run 30octane eth free gas in it and 200:1 Marvel mystery oil to keep exhaust temps down. Runs great and is super quiet. Wife LOVES it, it is her boat.

Friend of mine has a 20' Sylvan with planing pontoons. Runs a 135 Etec HO.
Good on fuel. Can pull skiers / tubers. Pretty impressive top end as well.
not my idea of a good time but it suits his needs.

just bought a new 2015 Cypress Cay (Harris) 22' w/ lifting strakes (2 tubes). The 115 Merc 4 stroke is great. 2.1 liter is bigger than the Yamaha (1.8). Oil change is easiest ever, did not spill a drop.
My local Merc dealer told me that Mercury did their homework on this motor. 28 mph so far, but still looking for the right prop. Hoping for 30. Dry weight on boat is 3000 lbs.death is certain; life is not
