09 etec question
I went to look at a 09 25hp etec this weekend for my tin can and during my inquiry visit we did a compression test on it after we fired the engine and let it warm up. After we established good compression on both cylinders we put the plugs back in and the engine would not fire at all. I assume that the ecm went into some sort of protection mode but I do not know. Is there a special procedure for doing a compression test on these engines? Or did I uncover the reason he is selling this motor? If anyone knows anything about this I'd appreciate the feedback. Thanks.

How many times did it get pulled over to do the compression test?
The 25 is a little different that the larger etecs, likely took out the CPS - Crank Position Sensor. Dealer can hook up to computer and tell pretty quick, and get you a complete engine history report - hrs, codes, overheats, etc.

We probably pulled on the rope 3-5 times per cylinder to achieve full compression. Cps sensors that sensitive on the smaller motors?

Not that the CPS is that sensitive it is the computer is powered in about 1/8 of a revolution of the flywheel. The rope start is what I was referring to.
The index of the plugs shouldn't cause it not to start, poor performance for sure but it should fire.
When you pull the recoil how many lights on the EMM light up?

*edit* to add: 6 or 7 good pulls could cause a CPS failure. Again, a dealer can tell you quickly.

We re-installed the plugs with the proper indexing, I'm willing to bet it is the cps as I'm sure we had at least 6-7 good pulls on the rope between the two cylinders. The owner of the motor was going to bring it to the dealer this week to diagnose. So is there a proper way to do a compression test on these motors? Like unplugging the ecm?
Also i was looking online at the diagnostic software and harness, are they all pretty much the same quality or are most people using one from a specific supplier.

You unplug the cps. Without crank position data the emm will not fire the injectors or coils.
