Evinrude G2 Relability?
Looking into buying a ranger 621FS with evinrude G2 300HP, wondering if anyone has experience with the motors? Know they are newer but how reliable are they so far?
Have had several dealers tell me they haven't had any return for issues so they don't think it's worth the extra money to upgrade to a Yamaha and one dealer said they had a couple issues and pushed me towards a $2-3k upcharge for a Yamaha
Any help is appreciated

If you are buying a Ranger, I assume you will use the boat for fishing.
That means that during a big part of the time you spend in the boat, you will actually see the engine.
Perhaps it is worth spending the extra $2-$3k so that you don't have to see the hideous etec back there.
Also, I don't know what the G2s look like from under water, but they may scare away the fish...Markus' Performance Boating Links:

As a Mercury Guy I must say I am quite amused at people who insult the G2. Is it different and odd ? yes but look at the beach whale shape of the Verado's and even the new 115 Pro XS Merc just came out with. I applaud Evinrude for sticking to two strokes. While odd I think a G2 would look better on the back of my Ally compared to a Verado if they were both not so heavy. Just MHO

Issues were plentiful on early motors. Bad exhaust temp sensors, vapor lock requiring vst tank and solenoid upgrade, ground issues, software issues, steering recalls, overheating on shallow water boats and a bad batch of key switches to name a few. New ones have the bugs worked out. The available power steering is nice and they perform very well.

In late April I attended an Evinrude G2 dealer meeting.
It looks like a real brute when you get to look at the lower unit cutaway, steering system components etc.
The fuel and oil stats were very impressive, and the torque numbers too.
Look forward to the next announcement from the E Team.
For those who think it looks ugly, look back thru both the white company and the black company and you'll find some real beauties.
Being able to buy a new 2 stroke outboard today, who the heck cares? I for one won't be looking back at the outboard much... .

Get a Honda, their outboards come from their cars. Honda is also the largest internal combustion engine manufacturer on the planet. They tend to get things right.

He doesn't want to get hit in the rear by fish swimming by, honda did their homework on alot of things and the outboard wasn't one of them. I have a friend who was ready to sell his worldcat because it was such a pig with the 225 hondas. A dealer took him for a ride in his with g2's and now he has 2 brand new g2's on his and says its not the same boat, even his wife said wtf the first time he nailed the throttles. Dave

I haven't seen it personally but he has the same flow scan and says at cruise 3800-4000rpm the g2s are showing way better fuel burn and faster, so 4 strokes/hondas aren't the cats ass. Dave

This and I have also seen an explained power head failure in only a couple months time, that was on a 250. We have a 300 out on the ocean, he is getting a low temp alarm every early morning, customer might not be letting it warm up before ripping on it. We will see how well it holds up.
