This is a very interesting thread that I just found and really enjoyed reading. I sold Rich his last boat a 21 Superboat and can't wait to see how this Talon turns out. I hope I get a chance to drive it. I personally think that the problems the extra weight causes can be solved by
    1. Bring the motor in 4" closer than the 300XS runs at.
    2. They are going to run saddle tanks approx. 44 inches further forward than Dale's old boat did.
    3. Running a manual plate instead of hydraulic.
    4. Keep the interior as light as possible (No big sound systems)
    5. If more is needed to get the right balance the battery could be moved forward.

Rich and 99% of the rest of the boat owning public are not race boat drivers like Dale is. They don't push there boats to the limits that Dale does. I personally think this could be made to work very well. Look at boats like the War Canoe, my Allison bassboat that I put a 3-liter XS on and both were made to work well and even won some races. I am no expert and this is just my opinion.

Bill, you make some good points. I am still not sure what the advantages are of the 400.
    Higher cost $$
    less fuel economy
    More weight
possibly a couple MPH faster but not yet known.

I just dont see any upside to the 400 in this application.

It's a 4stroke and the tree huggers will like you.
Myself I love 2strokes and will always own them, they have their own little magic that you can never get from a 4stroke. More so if your thing is small light boats.
    Long live 2strokes.

The cost of one of these are higher but what does it cost to add another 100 ponies to the 300XS plus you get a warranty
Fuel economy may be close after you add another 100 hp to your 300SX, plus you have a 3 star motor. The fuel economy is probably better than a 400 hp 300X motor
The weight is the problem so choosing a boat that can handle that with proper setup is important. I know this if I were planning on ordering a new Talon soon I would wait to see how this turns out before making a final decision on motors.

I watched an old 700 lb mod-vp sleek craft rigged with a four stroke Yamaha that I think weigh around 550 lbs. win it's class at Parker. It looked great on the water and seemed to handle well enough to out run the War Canoe with prop shaft heights set at one inch down. So I think a 1100 lb. 22' Talon can be setup to work with the extra weight. In a couple of years these motors may be our only choice according to rumors I'm hearing.

I guess you helping me to make my point. A 550 lb four stroke is way closer in weight to a 300XS than it is to a 400 at 668 lbs.
And you dont need to modify the 300XS to be 400 hp to compete with a 400 Merc. I am fairly sure it will do it with a basic DBR level 1.1 upgrade.
I agree, pretty sure we will only have 4 strokes available in our future.

Brian, you could be right. Calculations can easily be made by an engineer to figure just how much less setback is needed to create the same CG and have the same leverage on the transom as a 300XS has at whatever setback they are running them at. Since I have done this on another boat my educated guess is 5 to 6 inches is the place to start.
