    CDI failure?

My motor wouldn't cut off at key or safety lanyard had to hand choke it to kill it. Checked Red Plug and every other connection then restarted motor same thing won't shut down by key or safety lanyard. Disconnected Battery, reconnected battery and now it won't crank, no fire. Is this a burnt up power pack? Motor is a 1992 Evinrude 60hp.

Check the small 20 amp fuse in the main engine wire harness under the cowling. It may have blown. Yours uses a small/short 20 amp round glass fuse. Part number: 510884.

Once you get it to crank take an ohm meter to check the kill circuit, the black/yellow at the power pack goes to ground with key off and is open with key on. Most likely a broken wire.

So black & yellow wire should show:
Grounded with key in off position?
Not grounded with key in on position?

Yes to post #4, no fuse is for power to key switch so it will crank pack gets its energy from stator under flywheel. If you dont have a factory manual I would recommend one.

I have the Clymer book, but most questions are easier explained by y'all that know the answers better than this book. And most of ya'll already know all the things I need to address to make better than factory did and all the performance things I can do to squeeze as much hp I can out of the 56ci motor.
Truly thanks for any of the info it's all appreciated!!

I'm waiting on the mail lady to bring me my new control box, I'm going to try it first to see if motor will fire back up if not then a new power pack will be ordered and maybe new coils.

Is there anything else other than a new control box, power pack & 3 coils to keep this motor from firing???

Motor was cranking real good with a touch of the key it was running & now it's not firing at all after only disconnecting battery positive wire. Before battery disconnect it wouldn't cut off by key or lanyard. I've checked all wiring and no bad spots found, the red wire with small fuse is good.

It would crank perfect but turn key off & pull lanyard it kept running only disconnected battery and now it won't fire at all just spins over.

You may want to check the cranking output voltages for the stator and the timer base. If you've got a special "peak reading" voltmeter, you can qualify both of these components by verifying the cranking output voltages on both components VS this troubleshooting manual: check out cdielectronics.com. The have all the voltage expected when cranking the engine for both ignition components. I'd probably do these tests before investing in a new power pack

Agree with Ed. Control box would not be the issue if all wires check. Reason we mentioned fuse is at first it sounded like it would not crank. Try disconnecting the black/yellow at the power pack, ground a couple old spark plugs and see if it now has spark.

It's raining here like cats & dogs but I'll get to checking and doing racer said I'll try unplugging the black and yellow see if it cranks back up. It didn't start doing this until I removed the control box because it wouldn't throttle back down and that's how I found it was broken any way I had to remove key switch to get cover over to get control box off boat, then it stopped shutdown and then now fire at all. New control box is in shipping yes I got lucky and found a brand new red plug control box and will try to crank with it when mail lady drops it off, maybe it just this old universal control box because this whole problem didn't start until I removed controls for side of boat. I'm just trying to find out the things to look for until it gets here and if it still won't fire I'd know where to start looking. I don't mind buying a new power pack and I guess that would be next thing to replace?? So if new control box don't fix get new power pack then is there anything else to buy new that makes this motor run other than coils but dang I've never heard of 3 going out at same time unless CDI blew and blew them too??

Just tell me all the things to buy new and I'll get them like I said brand new red plug control box has been shipped. Just tell me all the things so I can do a, chain of elimination. We'll find the problem with new parts, remember it's just a 56er it ain't much to replace.

Since you now mention you had the control box apart that maybe your issue.
