If an inboard V bottom is what you are after, I would consider an older 27 or 29 fountain over a 240, 250 or 260 sport. I owned 2 Baja boats for a short time and they were not something I would consider going back to. 280 sport and a 320 (neither did anything particularly well but they were roomy and cheap).

Yeah I'm looking for a v-bottom with good freeboard and dead rise. I'd honestly prefer an outboard but thats really restricting my search to only a few boat builders

If you don't need an open bow find a Superboat, Velocity, Shadow etc. You will be glad you did and resale is better on them as well. I can put you in touch with a guy in NY who knows a lot of people with nice boats that are great for the bay if you want. PM me.

Given that criteria, try looking for a 25' Checkmate Convincor. They're better built than a Baja (full hand layup with Balsacore), have high freeboard and decent cabin space as well as a 24 degree deadrise. Oh, and they built a ton of them in both outboard (kind of hard to find) and I/O (much easier to find) versions. With a 502 you can tickle almost 70 MPH in one.

I had a 200 sunsport 20ft closed bow that had been beat to death and I still loved that boat. 2-3 ft bay chop at full throttle I threw the back seat out of it one day running never left me stranded. I miss that boat.

We have a 1996 Baja 260, 454MPI 60mph is top but on my lake that's about all you want to do anyway. The Baja stays on trailer in a building when not used. Its not a high performance type, just a cruiser for us. No structural problems at all
If I want to just go fast I will go in the Allison, but you will get beat up pretty good.

Outboards all the way!!!!! Find a boat with Optis or Verados and you won't be disappointed. I love the sound of an IO but would never go back after owning the Verados. ALL maintenance including 100 and 300 services can be done by anymore with a very basic mechanical skill and winterizing entails changing out gear case oil and pressing the trim button down to let the water run out of the engine. Done. Go to offshoreonly.com. There is a lot of good scoop and differing opinions. Knowledge and research now leads to less hassles later. I purposely shopped for a boat with no wood. Some possible IO options below. Good luck!

Several years back a member here named Scott did an extraordinary restoration on a 16ft Baja that he found junked on the side of the road. I will look for the thread. It was especially interesting since this was his first restoration, and it came out incredible. I actually saw that boat in person at the Rumble On The River back in 2003. That was a very cool project.
