I took Tres Martin's driving school this summer. He used this video as a text book example of an aerated hull (stepped hull) low pressure induced spin out. Not tabs, not wake, just not knowing what is happening with your boat and not knowing how to "fix it". The diver leaves the prop in the low pressure zone created by the stepped hull too long and the prop looses it's bite. Without bite (grip) what do you think will happen? If you don't get it, take the course. Better yet take the course anyway!

So is this equivalent to a blow out then?

I get it about the stepped hull.....They can get you... But there are other sources of trouble for an in experienced operator. Example: One engine over throttled, one drive trimmed higher than the other.....

The only thing missing from the video is a 30 pack..
So the reason for the hull reacting the way it did?

I have never been in or even close to one of those big boats like that so please go easy on me when I ask a couple questions.
1) What are the two small levers he pushes up next to the throttles?
2) What are the switches/buttons he is so focused on with his left and right hand from throttle up until about 1:28 when he goes full throttle?
3) Once he goes WFO he seems to still be busy working/operating something with his right hand, what's he doing? (This may have been answered in #2, if so ignore)
4) I have seen pictures of the dash in different boats and they all have lots of levers and switches and gauges. I understand why the gauges are there, but are these boats really that complicated to drive that you have to stay busy with the levers and switches like he seems to be?
Seems like my little 17 footer with a foot throttle and trim switch could provide more actual fun than all that complicated stuff?

Slimm, first and foremost, he was showing out. He had more action going on than a DJ with tha' turn-tables. Look at his face the whole time, he was trying to impress and didn't so much as crack a smile... Mr. Jo Cool. (yes, I can bust his chops because I've done similar trying to impress and paid dearly for it).
He was most likely adjusting the tabs and drives with those buttons. Otherwise, refer to my initial commentsYou never know what your faith is, until your faith has been truly tested.

Slim, the levers are FNR on the outside with throttles on the inside, one set for each of the twin engines.
Switches are likely trim tabs which he would be pulling up once he gets moving, and drive trims.
He's trimming drives I think for max speed without cavitating, there is a small swell from the look of it.
No so complicated, as stated in previous post I think he is trying to impress and is working the trims - which are in an awkward spot. Twin buttons on the throttle would have been better for him, hand stays on the throttle sticks.
To me it looks like the trouble started as soon as he powered up. He didn't look at his passengers once all of whom were standing, the girls at least didn't seem to be enjoying the ride. Just before it hooked it appears he crossed out of a wake at a bad angle, boat caught outside edge when settling and the driver didn't know how to handle it, or was too focused on making an impression to take corrective action.
Totally preventable accident, and the Captain always has command of his ship. Would be interested in knowing how the cards laid after the lawyers were done. Pretty damning evidence for the world to see on U Tube.
Kudos to the guy who shuts the thing down and realizes they need help.
