No kidding. Almost all my friends who work for themselves are out of business, I am WAY down myself after working for myself and starting and selling 3 different businesses since I was 13 among other well paying contract jobs. It is still fun when you don't HAVE to make money on it. Once you depend on the work to keep you afloat, then it stops being fun.

Hopefully if it can even happen change is coming soon.

I think the huge interest is due to Randy's rigging and paint is second to none.

He has proven that with his car restorations and previous boat projects. He did so many cars and won so many best of shows that he got bored with it and won't consider working on anything automotive at this point in his life "no matter how much you want to pay him". I consider myself lucky to have him as a friend.

If you love what you do, it's not really a job. I have had a bodyshop since 1979, which I shut down in 2006, and been doing boats since 2001. I was running the bodyshop, boat business, and storage by myself. It just got to be too much. I have never had a fulltime employee in 36 years and only had a friend help me part time for two years. At least this way, if there's a screw up, it's totally on me. I also had my Mini-Storage complex which I built in 1995. I sold it two years ago. I'm still in my same shop, but gotta pay rent now. The storage is where my income comes from. I had to build the new garage because I lost all my boat storage when I sold the business. I now only do boats and am a happy guy!!

Yea most of us that have a fast boat have pontoons for the wife and kids out of necessity from past scares the wife has had before when we only had fast boats and no kids. Not the most fun for sure but a good thing to anchor in a cove and rest on between thrashing out our fast boats....... Plus pontoons are huge and tall and take up a TON of your showroom garage space. You could specialize in fast pontoons with 300XS's on them and make some money with custom paint etc but if you don't enjoy it, why do it.

As long as you are doing what you love, it is fun not just work. I need to find another niche I love that makes a little money and I can't wait to see what you do with this Talon 22. Thanks for keeping us in the loop on this build. I will own one of the Talon's you paint and rig at some point, I just like the looks a lot better than the libs, no offence to lib owners but it will be a couple of years, I need to build a building that is heated to store my boats in first. I am out of space. Same thing that would happen to you if you started dealing with pontoons, they just don't fit in anything but garages built to handle the height.

I taped off all the areas that will not be silver. Here I am spraying gray sealer before the silver. I normally do not seal new gelcoat, but the gray makes the metallic silver cover better. The sponson tips will be black so I will not paint them silver.
