im not familiar with the optical ignition system on your combo.theres a member on here who built one much like yours a while back ,search the posts for it,it may give you some insight into the issues you are having.screen name is lockjaw, havent seen any posts from him in awhile, but he was really helpful on the omc stuff. theres alot of really smart omc guys on here(not me,lol)that know these 60 deg motors really well, hopefully they will chime in.

I am going to re jet the mains and lean out the mixture screw and go from there. I was just told by a 25+ year omc tech that the 91 heads have even compression where as my 96 fast strike heads are staggered to help idle smoother. He also mentioned that plugging the idle reliefs will make them run a bit rough on bottom because they were not designed to run higher compression.
I will post back my results after I run it again this weeekend

Tan wire is your overheat warning wire. The temp sensor has 2 wires the white/black is the one that turns off quick start, if you ground the wire from the box it turns off quick start. If you dont have the timing tool back it in the water with a prop and set timing while running. Your low rpm sounds like a sync/link issue these engines are a bit touchy to get this right. If you need jets I have most sizes at 40% off msrp but only what I currently have. The stagger in cylinder head volume is to compensate for the bottom cylinders running colder since they are the first to get cooling water, its 1.5cc.

I have not had any luck with CDI electronics for johnson and evinrudes, it is not un common to get a brand new one and it be bad. If u can still get OEM parts from evinrude you will be money ahead.

I hope for every one sake that CDI does a better job then in the past. They use to be horrible with omc stuff but spot on with Mercury. Go figure.

Hey guys,
I didnt mess with the boat for about a month. It was little bit too cold and almost always rainy here in southeast TN.
Alot of good information has been posted and I appreciate that. So now for the update:
One of my brand new CDI coil packs failed on #4 cylinder--funny someone posted just above about how cdi is spotty for johnson stuff
I swapped with a known good coil, stepped the jets down to 70D without decel knock, then down to the stock 69D size- still no decel knock..
I am running 64 GPS @ 6000RPM now. I can spin it the 23P renegade prop to the rev limiter at 6100!! I am thrilled, this engine is a beast for a 150hp.
I know i need to keep the RPM under 5800 so now the biggest question, what prop should I put on it? It currently has a 4blade 23P renegade, I would like to run a faster 3 blade prop
Thanks again

I just picked up an original raker 1 24P.
I got it from a performance prop shop and was told this one was better than raker 2, can't wait to try it!
