This is getting ridiculous!
On prop #6 and they all suck!
Basically no decent wheels for the old pin drive motors.
I thought the two blade brass I had Rich work would be the **** but slips so bad it would barely plane even after I hammered a bunch more cup into it.
They all slip so bad w/the motor up that I've cut an 1 1/2" out of the transom extension I built.
Last attempt is this old OJ I scored off ebay. Was for a bigger motor so had to make a shaft spacer and cut down the hub bushing.
I'm now looking for newer motors so I can get through hub exhaust which will let me get newer era props and be way more quiet.
W/this motor at current height it sounds like a giant chain saw going down the lake
The cool is davits are the **** and I love them. Get to our destination and drop the dink in the water and off we go.
We already did a lap around one of the Erie islands and saw things I didn't know were there. Including another inhabited island that I didn't even know existed.
And yes, I'm just a bit OCDI'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

Gary I have had the same problem with the old style LUs and props. One real problem is trying to find a prop with any kind of bow lift(rake) in it. I know there were some choppers and cleavers made for these motors (had one when I was younger but can't remember who made it) years ago but have been lookin for a few years and haven't seen a thing. I have been playin with a 25 Yammy ( yup I bought a rice burner!!!) as at least props are plentiful. Good luck as I am sure you will find the right motor.... how about a 40 merc ( I'll take one for my SLT!) then she'll fly! Gary

So after a season of trying to make the inflatable run...., unsuccessfully...., time for a change.
Just came across a '1981 25 hp Evinrude that with oldboatmans and the Antique O/B sites help, I find is a 35 hp w/a carburetor change
Its a salt water motor so not much fun to work on but I think the bones are salvageable.
Now thinking, if I could find a scattered similar motor, w/through hub exhaust, Id then have access to decent wheels too.
And just ordered a set of plans for this. http://www.boatdesigns.com/10-Squirt.../products/360/
If all goes well, this will be hanging off the davits this spring.
I'll leave the deck off, stain/varnish and maybe engineer side steer for it.Last edited by Instigator; 01-20-2017 at 07:06 AM.

The Squirt.
I have plans for similar designs but not quite what I wanted.
I will probably inset the motor like the inflatable so it will fit on the back of the cruiser. Need to measure to be sure.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

Thanks guys.
thunderduck, can only be 10' over all.
Joe, thank you sir.
My davits are only rated for 300 lbs total and not sure I could do it w/one of those.
Goal is to plane w/adults in the boat and doubt a 9' Whaler would do that either.
We'll see, to all the above.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

Round two while I fight for the time to finish building the new one.
This motor is 31 cu ins compared to previous at 25.
Whats really interesting to me is the difference between the 25 and 35 hp motors of this era.
I compared pt #s on pistons, heads, intakes, reed blocks, blocks and carburetor and they are all the same??
Just rec'd my factory manual that lists all specs and I found the difference.
Ignition timing (which Gary suggested).
The 35 hp is timed at 30* where the 25 hp is at 34*.
So 4* of timing equals 10 hp!
The 35 is through hub exhaust and has different gearing also.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

Also figured out the hubs of my old shear pin props can be replaced by the splined version to go on this motor. Did that for the brass 3 blade in the picture.

The 25 has more total than the 35? Same head gasket, jet?
