The Sandy Shoes was one of my favorite races as it was just like the Gold Coast Marathon, except it was all outboards.
I think I won first overall in the Sandy Shoes when you first ran it. Richie Baiz helped me build up a boat given to me by Bill Critchfield.
I was running Dade Marine by then and we were dealers for the Sabre boats he was building, We did a 1/8 inch plywood deck covered by a brand new material called Kevlar. George Griley supplied the Mercs with SSM. I drove the first day and won that leg. George ran the second day, got lost and came in second, but our time overall was good enough for first.Charlie

My first boat race was in the spring of 1964 at the Sandy Shoes. That was the only time I ever ran that race. I drove Brooke Russell's car and trailer up there a year or two later but never got the chance to run it again. One of the times I was there the race was between Mike Gordon and Red Wahl in his hydro. That might have been the last time it was run and the only time I ever heard of inboards being included. Red started the south run way over on the east side of Indian River in the shallow water. When he got to the first bridge he said he was converging with Mike who had run down the channel. Red said he decided to give way since after seeing the glasses Mike was wearing he wasn't sure Mike would see him coming. Don't remember who won that one.
