Can I ask what type of oil was being used?
A problem is only a problem when viewed as a problem...

No pro here at all but those pictures tell me lots of heat, friction and minimal to little oil to the journals and rod.
How do the upper and lower main bearings look?

I have seen many engines that were damaged by under oiling when drive gears strip. Usually the rods fail first ( and look like yours), along with piston/cylinder wall scoring before the mains crap out. Your mains were certainly lacking oil, but I think there was something else going on that prevented the oil from getting to the mains. Did you check for blockage in the bleed lines that feed the mains? The oil bleeding from the block would also seem to be a good place to look. The center main race is completely support by the block and it would be very rare to see one break.

Look at what system provides oil to this area. There's your problem. Not the type of oil used.....

Just to be clear, are you saying that the motor has 500 total DDT hours on it and has never been taken apart or rebuilt until last month when you had this problem?

Smartcraft said 538. Pistons and bores look nice but haven't been measured yet. The 2 cylinders next to the bad main have some scoring and will probably need to be bored oversize.

I was the only "previous owner" of the motor. I had purchased it new from Lee Sanderson and ran it for 323 flawless hours prior to Dave purchasing it from me. It always was given the most highly recommended 2 cycle oil per the opinion of a well known, well respected engine builder at that time. It is my understanding the motor has had an additional several hundred hours of run time put on it before it was found to be in its current condition.

Perfectly calm here Dave, not sure why you felt that I thought you were throwing me under the bus??? I was only trying to provide the history of the motor. My posting of that history had nothing to do with you.

538 hours out of an engine that is pretty high strung to begin with and has probably not been babied is not that bad. Many performance engines don't get close to that.
If you bore one....bore them all. WSM makes an oversized piston for the promax and they use a 1.5mm ring like the factory piston. Did you have cut heads on this engine?Go Time

If the block was leaking, maybe it caused a lean condition?

Yep, I agree and that is where I was headed. 538 verified hours is pretty darn good for a 225X. I think (could be wrong) that there was a guy on here that had close to 700 on his but I can't recall now who that was. To boot, the X only had two owners and both use cases are fully documented so there are no "missing pieces" to figure out.

The only modification to this motor was the rev limiter raised to 7300. It has the O ring heads but they have not been touched. It has been pretty reliable. The pistons and rings are clean and free with no carbon build up.
