He did not build it. He inherited it from his father who was a very successful New York property developer.

Many years ago, long before he went into politics, I read an analysis in a business newspaper that showed that he had been just as wealthy, had he just sat on that real estate empire rather than making a lot of headline-grabbing investments in hotels, casinos and airlines with his name on them.

he got a million dollar loan from his dad, and built on that on his own. he does not party, he doesn't even drink. read the 3'rd paragraph in the obituary carefully, it says Donald is a self made man. he does not own an airline, though he has a 757 with his name on it. I re read that paragraph a few times, it does seem they are referring to the father as a "self made man". no doubt a million dollar loan goes a long way to get you up and running, but money is a tool, and he made it work for him.
