I hear what you all are saying but a couple of things to remember here that are some facts.
1) You cannot use the speed/video posted with the Motion. We all know what that represents in knowledge being able to set up the boat.
2) The 318 Skater weighing in at 5500lbs ran 114mph with 2 people. That same boat with stock 300xs's would never break a 100mph in the same conditions and load.
3) The 32 DW ran 124mph and is pretty close in comparion with weight to the Kaps 32 DW pleasure. Again that boat ran a best of 115mph at LOTO one person light.
So it appears here in the US the 400r package is about 10mph faster than stock 300xs power. I am one of you all that has 300x motors and believe it is the best bang for the buck right now. I think in time someone will figure out the right set up for the 400r which IMO includes getting the lower unit out of the water and if they do It will run strong. I have been on CC with triple 350 Verados and they pull hard. I know it is not a motor for most on this site but I do not think it is right to take shots at someone who is trying something new whether they have money or not. FYI you can repower a twin 400r set up for 60k. If you were starting from scratch for a pair on new 300xs you would spend every bit of 46k also. So the difference is really 15k for 10mph, possibly more acceleration and no smoke.
For me I am happy in the 300x camp and look forward to working on my set up to get my 30 to run close to the 400r speed.

400R you say is 10 mph faster than a 300XS. However the 300X is faster than the 300XS by 5-10 mph on the same boat. The 300X makes 325-330hp and weighs much less than the 400R. Just saying....I am with you the 400R is too much money and too heavy to gain to little.

You cant blame Merc. The EPA has told them what they can sell so you cant expect them to sink more money into R&D on two strokes when they are essentially outlawed or will be shortly.

I agree with you Brad. That is why i am choosing not to repower my boat. However we all know if you are building a new boat today that is in the 30'-32' outboard class what other options do you have. It is really hard to find 300x motors anymore and more importantly spare parts if you blow one up.
As Rayzor has said only other option is an I/O package. But that is more money and a different program to maintain them.

So. You guys are saying that a 500lbs Monty motor making 400HP is still a better option and cost a fraction of this one?
Good, that's what I figured too.....True Viking

They do sounds awesome but the xcat motor isnt the same motor for 30 large is it? the ones I saw looked like they had different gear cases and midsections on the race boats?

BIG Difference right there. The gearcase alone will be way faster on the XCat. But how much is a motor like the one on the victory boat is what Im talking about. The white motor is for fishing boats. Triple 280,s on a 30ft cat gives you more HP, cheeper and weigh less. Just sayen. The 400R might be better on gas though? 2mpg at 75mph on the 32ft Skater. if they weighed the same as the 300xs then they would have my attention. Maybe the the shorty is 500lbs? The SHO is 505 so why cant the 400R be also? i guess ill wait another year maybe Merc will make them sub 500 one day. Theres no advantage for them to weigh as much as a car motor. Thats the not the point of an outboard in my opinion. There are lots of 400hp motors way under 650lbs these days.

Differences are mid section, 15 shaft in lower unit. It is the same gear case on both the 20inch US version and the race version. Clamp bracket is different also.
Race motors have external fuel pumps and dry sump oil tanks in the boat also.
Powerhead on both motors are the same.
