    Cool ** Johnson 1975 - The Entire Catalog! **

There it was, the model year before the official introduction of the V6. The last year that the V4 was the largest OMC outboard.

One of the first outboards I remember was Grand Daddy had the 70 in those colors on a yellow Ranger.
    Thanks for sharing Greg.

Btw, did anyone else notice that they had the V6 for racing but not for consumer?

The one thing that I always found interesting was that old 40 design that OMC carried over into the Commercial Series for many years. That was a 1950s design and it soldiered on until the early 80s. And also how it later acquired that strange cruciform lower unit, which was designed presumably to protect the propeller from underwater impact.

Ah, but the next year (76) they introduced the 35, which was a great engine and replaced that venerable 40. They got a lot of mileage out of that Big Twin 44-ci tooling and castings.

As a kid, it was always great and sometimes mysterious to see "what they'd show this year" as the obligatory race photos. Notice they showed the rotary, plus the KR-15M powerhead, and of course the rotary, the V4 and V6 powered boats.

I was visiting the factory on Hong Kong in 89 and the 40 was still coming out of there for markets all over asia and the pacific and the army even in the USA/OZ etc had them for many more years

For sure, I had an 81 35 and it was the perfect balance between power and weight on a 13-14' tin boat. That through-prop exhaust was so much nicer for a fishing boat than the above prop dump.

Absolutely! When I was a kid I lusted for a Boston Whaler 13 with a 35 on it!

I wondered though, how come OMC had the newer thru-hub design on the 35 (and later the 30), yet they retained the older over-prop exhaust design for the 25? They kept it that way all the way up until 1985, and while the 25 did get the updated lower midsection and lower unit in 1985, the Commercial Series 25 kept that older design for a number of years after. The 25 was essentially the very same engine as the 35, with different carburetor jets and other minor changes I assume. I always wondered why OMC kept those two engines different in such a way, even though they were the same basic platform.

This is from the 1984 Evinrude brochure:

These catalogs are great, I remember as a kid wanting a 9.9 or 15 so bad i had allways thought the fat 9.5 was ugly.I still think the 9.9/15 was one of the all time greatest outboard designs, they were so compact and the 15 had amazing power. I remember too wondering why the 25 and 40 took sooo long to get prop exhaust, but was told when i went to the omc training center after high school that they kept production for so long because there were tons of the 25 and 40 hp engines all over the world in under-developed countries and the old design could be easily to maintained in the field, what was it 6 screws and the bottom of the foot was off and the gears/ clutch dog could be changed in 10 min.. Also the reverse power was better for pulling fishing nets and stuff like that. Dave

you could run the 25 in a stock class very high but without LWP
In Australia the class was doing 50mph in the late 70's
3rd world also wanted shear pins
