could be a "painted 225 PM block".. other than tha 260/280, its tha only one that doesn't have bleed line ports, unless tha arm is hidin' 'em in tha picture.. tha efi (pump and vst at least) are '94/95 or earlier.. think '96 went to tha pump in tha canister.. there should be a build date stamped somewhere on tha block around tha bend in tha timin' arm... thats only way ya gonna know tha year of tha block.... that may or may not be a serial number stamped in tha flange....tried several combinations and it didn't show on Mercnet.....

its been "touched" if it is a PM... some have said they have seen "painted 150, 200, 225 PM's" but I've not... not production anyway.. Block may or may not be '98 but tha rest is questionable.. know tha pump and vst is earlier.. 16 amp stuff also so its had a wrench or two on it....... tha build date is stamped in 1/8" numbers, M/D/YR. somewhere on tha port side, block half. usually at tha base of number two or on tha flange......

ive not seen any painted promax unless someone did it, none came from merc painted i think its a pm block it has no bibs, tommy is corecct it has early efi unit which my brand new 95 pmax had, that dont hurt nothing its probably better cuz of the pump deal C4 heads did come on some pmaxs though most have some 789 on um these may be cut since its got 16amp electrics i would not buy it unless i pulled the heads check to see if its 7 petal should be 22 7/16 bolt heads on reed plate (i think)

If the motor is local and you like the price, get him to meet you at a shop to have it checked out. For instance across the river in country is Dennis Berry

Maybe he could give it inspection. I don't know him just of him and would be from what I hear a reputable guy to give evaluation of its heath and possible build.

I think this is just a bunch of different parts put together. That could be good or bad. He stated it pushed his bass boat 60 mph at 6100 RPM. Seems slow for that engine. I realize there are many factors that affect top speed.

I actually almost bought a 28 skater from Dennis about 15 years ago. He was one heck of a nice guy and seemed like he knows his stuff. This engine is about 6 hours from Dennis's place. I wish I had the money to just have him build me an engine.

Thanks for the help guys. I think I might pass on this one. Seems like someone had a bunch of parts and put together an engine that I am not interested in.

Some Mercury complete replacement under warranty came painted so did the some 300x for some reason! I have seen 2 personally and the one RussF posted is one of mine. It was opened and rebuilt so I can assure you it is a 225PM in very way.
If you were given just a block and yes it did not come painted!
ondtip, like mentioned above all good info, that motor has been into, good or bad who knows. That VST system is from the first gen PM's 95 but if it is working well the motor will never know the difference!
