    white is fast enough?

    Example 1

    Dirk Pitt's 300 Etec 21 Tuff. 7 year warranty, no yearly water pump replacements, lower unit oil every 3 years, low fuel consumption, regulars gas. 90 mph almost out of the box. That would be enough for me in that boat

    Example 2

    My brother is thinking of repowering his 18 Charger DL. He could go mid 70's with an Etec. Again, fast enough for (me and him) in that boat

    Example 3

    On my SS2000, would a 150HO feel slow in acceleration compared to my 225 PM? If it went mid 80's with a stock gearcase, once a year, and pulled hard to get there, that would be enough. Two questions though, blowout speed and low/mid range. Any thoughts?

    Idk We have been seeing lots of broken etecs on long island lately yes salt water and crap fuel but still rotted exh plates crap mounts little skegs plastic everything even the dealers don't want to change w/pumps with that f in shift shaft why after 100 years they can't make them slip spline male female like everyone else I'd never go 3years with out dropping gear oil that's crazy so when it blows up you wait all summer for dealer to get claim through for new case i don't love the way Merc runs there show theses day but I'm staying black,all this after I just spend two days fixing broken 07 225 etec with less then 300 hours any one every take the leg off and change upper and lower mounts ? I've done many and never seen to the same there all ways a little off need to pry bar over to get bolts started my Merc offshores always go back together the way I took them apart no prying hammering or f word needed just bolts up no foam or rubber things needed

    Don't fix it if it isn't broke . All this BS about no water pumps and gearcase lube for 3 years ......... OK .

    Got my first evinrude 200xp and compared to the 200 merc its ofcourse alot heavier but runs great and is good on gas and hav to admit the sound is pretty cool bone stock .... sounds like a howl sorta is best way to describe it comin down the river ....

    My brother has a 26 year old Johnson 200 with 800 or 900 hours and has only changed the water pump twice. It's goofy that we accept crappy water pumps from Mercury and that they have never fixed the design. Same for gearcases. What's the transmission/differential oil replacement schedule on your car or truck?

    Having said that, the white gearcase is going to have an easier life as it can't be raised as high as a sporty or CLE. This will cost speed but increase life.

    Actually the Mercury gearcases are damn good in my opinion . The smaller diameter , high pressure impellers that are typical of Mercury 2.0 , 2.4 , 2.5 need to be changed regularly due to their taking the shape of the smaller diameter housing but it's a very simple process . Another part of removing the gearcase regularly is to make sure it will actually come apart at all and to inspect everything as well . The major design flaw I see is that the water pump base is also used to seal off the gearcase as well instead of having a separate seal retaining housing like OMC , Yamaha and later 3.0 litre Mercs .
    Gear oil replacement schedule in your car or truck is not a real comparison and you know that . The outboard case oil is subjected to heating from engine exhaust . In my saltwater boat I change oil several times a year and there is never a time that it didn't need it . In my Sportmasters I change it approximately every 6 - 10 hours and in that short time it changes color and consistency . Pretty soon there will be piles of dead etecs everywhere like everything else .

    the best thing about the etec is it doesn't have all that air compressor racket on the motor. simpler design to get efficiency and power. and by the way i have 2.5 water pump on mine so where do i fit in

    No BS on the water pumps. I just pulled apart a 1995 90-65hp jet evinrude V4 and owner said he bought it new and never changed the water pump. Also told me it had good pressure, I had to talk him into changing it. 20 year old impeller looked good, no dry rot,no cracking vains, it looked like it could be used over. Of course I put in a new one.

    OMC does volume pumping, merc does pressure. The 3.0 mercs have a larger impeller that resembles the omc's, and run less pressure. And it does seem to last longer than the 2.5 impeller.

    I can see the reasoning behind the temperature getting to the gearcase oil, but with a 7 year warranty, I'd leave the oil in for 3 years.

    We did leave the gearcase oil in our 115 HO for 3 years. It's mostly a water ski motor, and is never surfaced. When I put the boat away in a couple of weeks, the oil will stay for another season.
