EGT thermocouple depth on Mercury 2.5 200

Going to install a set of EGT probes on my 1999 Mercury 2.5 200. I have had the damned things for a year and if I had installed them already then I surely would not have leaned out #4 last Friday...ugh.

My question is this--> Is there a preferred depth for the tip of the thermocoupling to ensure the most accurate reading? Barely into the stream? Midstream? All the way bottomed out then back it up a 16th?

What are normal temps while idling, midrange cruising and high rpm running?

Anything else I should know? I hope to get this done so I don't turn any more pistons to mush once I get it back on the water.

Slimm, where are you taking the sample,ex cover(rifle bolts) or ex plate. You want to end up with the tip as close to the center of the stream as possable.

I am using the bottom two bolts on the exhaust divider, rifled bolts. Am I correct in thinking that the temp could vary depending on tip location? Seems the velocity and temperature of the gases close to the block or exhaust cover may be slightly different to heat transfer into the aluminum but I sometimes over think things and try to think outside of my abilities.

Thanks for the info, and btw I am still waiting for some video of that boat.

The hottest gas will be at the center of the gas stream, try to get the tips there. The exposed tip TC will read the fastest. And it is not uncommon for one side to read 100* or so less than the other.Went to hardy yesterday.Had a great day.Waited for the right time to to turn on the camera, then forgot to do it.To busy havin fun I guess.Try again soon.

Well at least you had the intention! Thank you again for the info, be safe out there when you get around to the video.

Just perusing my subscribed posts looking for some part numbers and ran across this thread. Did you ever get some video of that thing or do I need to just take a ride up there and twist yer arm? I have two cameras for boating and my Canon that takes a beautiful video, we could make an event around it!
