    Outboard cat 300x's vs 300xs's

Looking at 30 ft outboard cats and trying to figure out which motors to get. I have searched and read the forums. I know about the fuel economy difference. I know maybe a little more speed with the 300x. I'm also concerned with maintenance and reliability. What experiences do people have and which would you prefer? Thanks!

I've run twin 300xs on my outboard cat. 5 yrs and no problems other than a false neutral sensor in the 1st 5 hrs (fixed via warranty)on both motors. Regularly serviced and gear oil changed and they have run awesome. Mine might be going up for sale as i'm debating doing the DBR or repowering with 400's.

Having owned both on my 28 Skaters the XS motors are as they say great on gas and provide good power. If you are buying new and not mechanically inclined, and money to burn having a warranty is a good thing. If you like the sound and power of a race motor the 300x is the way to go IMO. I love having them. However getting parts if needed may become harder to find as well.

Thanks for the replies. I'm in the process of purchasing something with 300xs's. I learned what you both have stated and decided they would be best for me. They have the 4 seal kits and are otherwise stock. Besides the gear oil changes what other maintenance is recommended?

Not much. We just followed the suggested service hrs..plugs, etc. but did the gear oil regularly beginning and end of season depending on hours. Just make sure you run the right fuel. Those motors don't like the 87 or 89 octane.
