2005 Mercury 200XS Opti oil questions?
Just picked up a mint 2005 200xs Opti for my GSE. It is replacing a 225promax. Couple of questions. My gas tank is 1/3 full of 40:1 premix. Do I have to drain it or can I dilute it down with more gas? Also what oil should I be putting in the oil tank? I think previous owner was running Merc performance plus.
Thanks.1996 Allison GSE /200XS

Mercury DFI is whats recommended for less carbon build up but Im sure you will get other suggestions. I would just run the tank as it is and add gas.

Do whatever you can to get the gas with the oil out of the tank.

Yeah, better mpg, no smoke, etc. My promax is just worn out.
Got lucky I guess on the 200xs. Only 20 orig hrs, 20" mid and I am using my sporty. Will be kept bone stock including the oil injection.1996 Allison GSE /200XS

You cannot premix a opti or any DFI motor. The gas only goes on top of the piston. No way you want to run pre-mix. Get it out before you run the opti. It will carbon up the rings and foul the plugs.

My friend with two 2004 225 opti's has been running Merc DFI oil since new with zero problems..... but I know Merc has bounced around over the years on oil recommendations for certain engines etc.... If I'm not mistaken, Merc recommends Merc Racing oil in DFI's now......

definitely do not run it with oil in the gas. the fuel rail will not tolerate the oil on the diaphragms. oil injects into the block. clean fuel thru the injector. the gas and oil do not ever get mixed together on a optimax.

dave is right. there are a lot of part that are not conpatiable with mixing oil. eg the rod caps do not have a gap for oil to flow into. there are many more
the 200sx 2004-2005 are second gen motors. the 2001-2003 are gen1. there were a lot of changes and reason not to buy gen 1.
the gen 1 & 2 were qualified with mercury premium plus oil. there fore mercury racing at the time recommended the plus and not the dfi oil. the dif is the optional oil. i have 250 hrs on a 2004 and its still going strong with plus oil.
the 200sx was dinoed at 220 hp. but its more efficient then a honda 150 4 cycle. i have a gps smart craft system on a hydrostream voyager. i have gone as high as 7.4 mpg at around 35mph. top speed so far has been 80.

Is it a 15" motor? Are we talking a 200xs ros 2.5 liter or a 200xs 3.0 liter?

Thanks for all the info guys. Will be draining the mixed gas out of it tomorrow. Bought a couple jugs of Merc premium plus oil too. Can't wait to see how it runs this weekend.
