    Plugged pitot

After running through some milfoil the pitot in my lower unit that I use with my dash speedo is hopelessly plugged. I have tried compressed air, and I have tried to carefully run a small drill bit by hand into the entrance of the pitot, but nothing I've tried has loosened up the blockage enough. Suggestions?

Buy a new pilot jet. They aren't that expensive. If it's that's jammed up... then you may damage it trying to get it clear "mechanically."

Personally, I use spray carb cleaner, and compressed air back and forth. Eventually it will soften, and pop out.

BUT... if the jet is that gummed... then what do the bypass ports in the carb body look like??? If they are plugged... it will fall on it's face when you hit the throttle.

He is talking speedo pitot. Try blowing from the speedo side.

Soak it for a couple of days in a bucket of water, then run a guitar string through it.

I've tried blowing through the speedo side with compressed air. Still jammed. Even running it through the water at 70+ mph isn't clearing it. I don't have a bucket big enough to soak it in water for days. Hmm.

I see... You're talking about the integrated pickup in the lower unit.

Unplug it after a day of boating then... Go to the local music store first, and ask for a .030" guitar string. The outer winding will taper down and end about 6" before the end, leaving a 6" tail of plain steel wire approx. .015". Start with the thin core end, then use the full diameter part to pop the crap out.

I gave up on that thing 20 years ago and added a pitot to the transom. Works well and doesn't plug.

Save those E and A string tips after you restring. They're great for unplugging super glue tips and such.

Pull the lower unit off and go from the top down with a piece of heavy wire and some compressed air. I have cleared many this way.

I tried that already. No go. I'm worried about perforating the passage that goes through there. How sturdy is it? How aggressive can I be?
