Starting to paint another 2016 21 Liberator. (I know you guys must be tired of these)
This is the 3rd 21 Liberator I'm doing this summer. This one will get a full custom paintjob. Here's what the before pics look like. I'm taking it off the trailer here.

What do you recommend for sanded Gel Coat prior to painting as a wipe down ? Do you need to prime with 2 part Urethane top coats on clean gel ? Thanks , can't wait to see this one !

First I use a DA sander with 220 or 320 grit paper. Then I hand wetsand the whole boat with 400 grit paper. I then let it air dry. I NEVER wipe it down with anything. Sometimes I use a scuff pad and soapy water and go over the boat just before taping or painting. I always rinse right away and let air dry only. If the boat has been waxed, then you can wipe it down a couple times with wax and grease remover or even lacquer thinner BEFORE you do any sanding. If you do everything properly, you don't need any primer or adhesion products. It is different if you are doing fades or graphics. Then you'll need to use Intercoat clear so you can lightly sand before the next coat or clearcoat. Sometimes you will also need an adhesion promoter like "BULLDOG" There's really too many steps and variations to try and explain it all. It takes me about 3 weeks to paint a boat. About 3-4 days of it is the final sanding and buffing. That's where the really slick finish comes from, but it's a ton of work. Paint and materials averages $1200-$1500 for a 21 ft boat. The clear I use is $360 a gallon!

Next, I fit the rubrail to the boat. It's not a good idea to try and bend the metal rubrail around corners on fresh paint. Then I dril and cut all the holes I need in the entire boat. This is so that I don't cut them through fresh paint which could cause an area for the clear to start peeling from.

I sanded the whole boat today and then wetsanded it. I will do a pearl orange fade in the front, but first I start playing with tape to figure out what design I want. I also epoxied in a shifter console on the right side. I will glass the whole thing in later. Here's a pic where I may do a "lightning" design

I started painting the orange pearl fade today. I blend four shades of orange pearl and have to intermix the colors with each other and also dilute with clear to get an even fade. Next I will start the graphics.

I pulled it outside today and sanded the colors. Then I pulled it inside and started taping a lightning design. I never did it before. It looks pretty cool! They will start out purple pearl in front and fade back into different shades of pearl blues. I just got one side done so far.
