Thread: 400r - does 3.0 sporty bolt up?

Wow that's surprising. Is your mid cut down or a Taylor? There are a couple guys down here running them on 300xs for hundreds of miles over 100. One comes to mind an aggressively ported a 3.0 with 170 psi on a skater (brutal on gear cases) and don't have any issues.
ive put 1.62 3.0 sportys under v8 and 8000rpm 3.3L with no issues so far?

Verado to 3.0 case fits but verado needs their specific drive line. I've done fishing motor 3.0 to verado gear case swaps and the case fits on the mount. But. Must swap in drive line and not sure if sporty drive shaft and verado shaft have interchangeable bottom halves under water pump the drive shaft seals the oils pan so it has to be verado specific.

As far as shift codes. None seen if you set shifting like their original case. It's IirC slightly tighter than a cable driven shift cam

No need to adapt the 3.0 litre SportMaster. Mercury Racing has already developed a SportMaster specifically for the 400R, that won't have any issues, and has a warranty. Both the 5.44" diameter 400R Heavy Duty Offshore gearcase, and the 400R SportMaster gearcase come standard with the 1.75:1 gear ratio, and 1 1/4" diameter prop shafts. This ratio is best suited for the larger hulls that the 400R was, and are mounted on most. Whether it be a twin, tripple, quad, or five engine installation, such as last months newly released MidNight Express 43 CC, that utilize surfacing propellers on the 400R SportMasters. Many other multi-engine, 400R boats have been delivered to customers, from such manufacturers as NorTech, Cigarette, Intrepid, etc. Numerically lower SportMaster gear ratios are available, but not yet publicized. To find out more about the new 400R SportMaster's features, contact Mercury Racing at 920-921-5330. And/or call Scott Reichow, with Mercury Racing Propellers, at 920-924-2037.

I received this reply from Rick Mackie at Mercury Racing:
Hi Greg:
I don't believe the 3.0L Sport Master will bolt up to the Verado and if it did - I wouldn't recommend it.

bolt pattern is the same, a driveshaft would have to be splined to fit. i don't know what they were thinking with the propshaft bearing design in the verado case, i feel that the sportmaster propshaft bearing setup is beefier. i've been getting about 3-400 hours out of gearsets on the skater. people have been running 2.5 cases using the taylor mid, and the gears are way beefier in the 3 litre case.i was thinking about building a verado at one point and had looked at the gearcase situation, so i know it can be done. what works on our stuff may be problematic on a heavier boat though. And I run a taylor 15" mid, yet to break anything, you'd be hard pressed to abuse it as much as I do on this boat.

The std thru hub props look goofy on the 544 cases. The question is on a small boat with the big case up out of the water will you need a larger prop dia to get the same amount of blade in the water and if so will it kill the numbers..
