need 2-300 more rpm's out of this looper

How can i get 2-300 more rpm's out of my 1987 2.7 looper? It is all stock with slightly shaved heads and 1 size up on jets. Might be on the rich side. It also has stock 3 liter looper electronics with the rev limiter removed (butterfly pack). I'm currently spinning a 24 chopper to 7100-7200 @81-82 mph. I need to be closer to 85 mph without going to a 26p prop to be competitive in that class. Is there anything that can be done without dismantling it and porting? Any small secrets anyone wants to share?

In stock form to turn any more rpm than you are it will need to be right on the edge jetting wise. Timing at 18 degree and I hope you have a race flywheel.

Aftermarket heads would be nice, but not an option right now.

Unfortunately, i have the stock flywheel. Timing is @ 16 degrees and it's jetted rich according to the piston tops. Should i be afraid of the flywheel coming apart at these rpms? I figured 7500 was the limit for the stock wheel.

Why not go with a better prop? And why not a 26"? You are way out of your power band with stock porting at 7200. Heck it stopped pulling at 6500. Hoss Triton 1 will plane off quicker, push more water with bigger and thinner blades.

Problem with stock flywheel at those rpms is the harmonic balance, flywheel won't come apart the crank will.

The problem with a 26 is the acceleration is lacking. I'm doing 1/4 mile drags and by the time i hit mid track the other boat is long gone. I would just drop down to the 75mph class if my boat was slower, but its not. The damn thing is right between the two classes. I know the stock porting is done. I can feel it around 68-6900. I was just wondering if there was a trick that could be done to the front half or intakes to gain a little.

I've see lightened stock flywheels. Would that be a viable solution?

You may be surprised what a good 26 will do if it's worked to flash high and be loose out of the hole.

Didn't they make 2 different flywheels, one 35 amp and one 10amp. Or was that just crossflow motors?

Just crossflow Greg unless you get a 10 amp race wheel. You could use a 10 amp V4 looper but would need a larger dia. ring gear or a starter remount.

Take a look at the back of a later model engine the back wall has a much better flow. I did this to my modvp stuff in 87 and it helped, about 70 rpm up top and some acceleration. The 10 amp race wheel also frees up some power due to less charging drag. If you can find an old regulator with the purple wire that uses key power to excite the regulator, you can use an extra switch take this power away and turn off the regulator which is good for 7hp at 7k rpm but you will not have a tack signal.
