A couple of the foundries we use basically "paid off" all the old guys who knew what they were doing and got them to take "early retirement" a couple years ago to save them money on their employee healthcare (and probably wages)... and now they have nobody that knows what to do when the castings don't turn out.

One just went out of business.

This is a good foundry, he makes snowmobile cylinders that are real nice.

So why close down completely? I would love to have a 2.5 MAD EFI. But Robert says no.

I don't know, people close their businesses for lots of reasons... some have made enough money and just want to retire. I do know that it's incredibly frustrating to try to make nice parts when the foundry keeps sending you crap.

The frustrating thing is we have many thousands of dollars tied up in Boat and engines that will only take a 16 inch mid, now what do we do?? I have gone through 3 MAD mids in 3 years and need another. I agree there was a casting problem, so why didnt they just find another foundry or go back to the original one, the older mids didnt have the same problem... I am looking into having them casted here, though obviously due to our small numbers it will probably never be worth the investment. There was a huge amount of work put into them to get them to look nice painted up. Would just be nice to know if someone is taking over the molds or what is going on with them.

Same answer I got when I emailed them I have brought a fair few of them and broken many so I do think they had enough. Robert had said casting price and molds were no good any more.

Im sure the HP from todays engines is probably a bit too much for cast aswell. Maybe someone should try to get some Billet mids done.. There are a couple of guys here in AU that are going to have a try at it, though time is a problem for them..

Please articulate on the Process of hardening Static (Sand cast) Aluminum!! This should be interesting to hear.

To start with what alloy were these cast in? Heat treatment is a straight forward process which was probably not done and again lord knows what alloy was used.
If these were breaking then the Mexican aluminum more than likely was not the right stuff.
There are some foundries in the North East with allot of aviation background who understand how and what to pour.

I understand both processes. But the processes you linked to are only needed if Aluminum is annealed i.e. bending Pipe, bending Flat bar etc. As cast Aluminum normally results in natural heat treatment through the cooling process. And again all Aluminum cannot be heat treated. It has to contain other alloys (Like titanium) to be hardened. Also a metal to hard/brittle wont hold up to excessive vibration and stress. Therefor the mechanical properties need to be incorporated in conjunction with the chemical composition to provide elasticity. i.e Tensile, Yield and Elongation

I took one of my mid sections to 2 foundries today to look into having them made, both did say after they are made they would put them through heat treatments to strengthen the alloy.. Maybe this wasn't being done??

They mentioned a key word there "Alloy"!!! Like Charlie mentioned in post #26 "lord knows what alloy was used".
