In my opinion it is no coincidence that quite a few boat racers were firefighters. The work schedule was one factor but I think the mindset of racers and firefighters are very similar. We operate in a threat environment and need to make quick and effective decisions.

Well put, JEFE----
But my biggest threat was Billy Don--and not on the race course. We went 'head to head' in a lot of races, in a lot of classes, and I don't think Don ever finished ahead of me (he usually didn't finish)
---And when he was drinking he never let me forget----

We all had our nemesis. I will not name any of mine since they are probably still with us and some may follow this forum. There were also guys who were just great fun to race with. The guys like Felix Poppel and Johnny Reed that you could run side by side with and know they would not do something stupid or unethical. Felix and I finished a heat at the Marine Stadium so close that neither of us knew who won. We looked at each other and laughed and we both yelled "let's just do that again".

If you look at the fine print in that clipping you will see results for both myself and my brother in his one and only boat race that day.
