    Painting motor cowling

I am going to paint my Merc factory cowling with acrylic urethane paint and need to know what I need to do before spraying it. Do I need to seal it first and if so with what? Can I just rough up the existing paint and spray? Do I need to spray a 2k primer first? Never done this so any advice will be appreciated. Thx, Jim

The older motor covers seem to like a adhesion promoter,of some sort.If it's fairly new may not be needed.

De-grease it and sand the whole thing with 220 grit w/d paper. Repair bad areas and 2k prime it. Sand with some 400 w/d and shoot it. Sprayed many merc covers with acrylic dupont centari with hardener added. Even better results with dupont Imron. The newer plastic covers need some bulldog adhesion promoter. The old pressure molded glass reinforced type don't need it. Your 98 should be the old style.

I too am going to be re painting my 2000ish cowl with acrilic urathane. And already got the new merc stickers for it to mach the boat color. Is using the soapy water to move the decals around a good idea?

Soapy water works ok,don't get to wild with the soap and have a good rubber squeegee handy, along with a good cotton towel.

I repaired some cracks by veeing them out and filled with epoxy and small spots I used body putty. I sprayed those areas with Rustoleum rattlecan primer. Now I am wondering if those will lift when I spray with the 2k primer. Do I need a primer sealer before anything. If so do I need it from my paint manufacturer. Thanks for your input. Jim

Remove all the derusto type stuff, it almost always causes trouble. The solvents are much stronger in the 2k primer than the enamel rattle can primer can handle. No sealer will cure that.Remember that when painting, less is better. Thin primer layer, several thin coats of paint. Finish will last longer and look better than a thick build up of material. Ask the paint place what they suggest under the paint you choose. Epoxy primer is best, 2k is good, old lacquer primer and rattle can enamel are poor. Sealers usually go on really thin, and just before painting over the primer. It is used primarily to reduce sand scratch swelling after cure.
