Feral Hog Hunters on Here?
....do any of you fellow members partake in the hunting of "Feral Hogs"? I know that there are quite a few of you guys and gals that live in states that are...like us down here in Texas...over run with them and was curious if when you aren't running your boats if you might be popping some caps and harvesting some "Free Range Bacon"!
Anyone?
Here is a vid my friend shot the other day.

I'd love to go on some hog hunts if anyone knows anyone wanting an extra gun on a hunt I'm willing to down my share.
I've never hunted hogs. The places I've hunted didn't have a problem because the land owners in the area killed everyone they saw so I never got to see any to shoot.Last edited by CDave; 07-06-2015 at 11:00 PM.

Are you guys using .223? A more substantial calibre would give a more humane kill.

...Smoking Joe, I use a Smith and Wesson M&P10, which is a 7.62x51(.308) round and I make sure that with proper shot placement they usually drop first shot. However have popped some big boars that have taken as many as three 178gr rounds.
I would never take an off the shelf .223 out on one of my hunts unless there was an almost guarantee I could get a headshot. Lowest caliber I'll shoot is a 6.5 Grendel and that preferred to be less than 150yds or so.
....CDave, I am headed up the 21st to Atlanta,TX for some work and will be hunting a place swarming with hogs. 5000 acres with a 15acre lake on it. Place has never been hunted so they think they are safe! Have four "pig barrels" made up and will have them set out on the places I have seen tracks in the next week of so. Will load them down with corn, purple KoolAid, and cheap cat food! Friend already took the big Kubota tractor out with the post hole digger and made some holes along a power line cut through the timber that I can load up with sour corn and diesel that ought to get them going. Will talk to the landowners and see if I can just lease the place from them for hunting as right now they just want me to come up there and stay a month and as they said "Kill all those Critters", but I'd rather just take what I can use here for the freezer and throw on the pit.

I am in if you need help. PM me and let me know what your plan is. I don't like the whack them and stack them method but would rather harvest what I could use. This time of the year in Texas would be tough sledding. Would love to get in on some Fall and Winter hunting. I have .308 equipment and NV scope if nigght hunting is and option.I don't like to hunt, I like to set up and kill!!!

I'll keep ya in mind Dave. I prefer looking for those hogs this time of year as it is finally hot enough to keep them around water. They don't sweat so they use any water they can find to regulate their body temps thus having that Lake on the property is a big help. Also, down here we can hunt them day or night. Not set up for it right now, but later I'll be using NV for spotting and Thermal on the rifle, just need to decide what I am going to mount on the stick. Picking up two more 30gallon plastic barrels this afternoon to turn into feeders so I'll have several spots to draw them in.

Wild hogs taste a little strange if your used to eating the domestic kind. Shoot a young sow and try some before you stock pile the freezer only to find it is in-edible to you. This is why some folks choose to shoot and bury them....

I hunt and cook them all the time in the Florida swamp.
My gun of choice is a .45-70 I hunt in heavy brush.
I brine them for 5 days then roast them for 4-5 hours up near
250 degrees. I shoot the little ones less than #100 for cooking.
Shoot big ones just to get rid of them.

...the only ones that I have found that have a petty nasty taste to them are the Sows that are still nursing a bunch of young ones. If I see she has a gaggle of baby bacon trailing after her I'll just leave her be so she can get rid of those piglets when they get bigger.

Catch the pigletts and pen them up. Feed them good food for a yr and then slaughter. As good a pork bbq as you will ever have.
