    Trim sender gauge problem

My trim sender gauge is all of a sudden going to full tilt display when the key is turned on. I have checked the sender and it seems to have changes in the resistance readings on a digital meter so I am kind of lost on this one. The gauges are all old school Nordskog but have been perfect until now. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Best wishes, Carter Powell

Un plug the sender and turn the key on see what the gauge reads. Jump the 2 leads to the gauge togeather. No change gauge is toast. If it sweeps up to down may be the sender but need to know the correct resistance of the sender from up to down.
the jumping thing is kinda extreme but if it won't go up to down doing that the gauge is the problem.

Sender can have local shorts that max gage. When testing sender (disconnected from gage) such shorts or dead spots in windings should show on meter. Pretty easy to replace the sender.

but depending on the sender you need to know what one you have, Merc and OMC work opposite.

    Hi Jim how you been?

Been good, dave. Hope all is well with you!.

You're right, of course, need to use same pot (sender) for replacement.

Found the problem. There was a bad ground where the sender itself is grounded to the trim pump casing. I cleaned it and also added another wire to a second ground. Perfect!

    Thanks guys, Carter
