    Hydrostream vandal

Hey guys, looks like we just picked up a hydrostream vandal. How good are these hulls and do they have core? It doesnt appear that it has any from what we can see, but most of the glass of the hull is painted. I think the ideal motor for it would be a v4 looper with a 16" midsection. What should it run speed wise if the v4 was to make 150-160 hp? Id like to think it would be into the high 70's or more, if its a single seat. Any thoughts on what to run engine wise? Ive seen a few on here with v6's on them, how do they handle the big power?

My opinion is that The Vandal has been overlooked since it`s popularity back in the early 80`s. It was used in many classes and could handle modified V-6 power of that era with no problem. The motors we have today such as a 300 Drag may be a bit much tho.

For a 14 footer they are a great boat. My father's vandal runs 70 miles an hour all day with a stock V4. There are some that are running a lot faster with more power, but you better be careful and know what you're doing. I saw Scotty (bruisercomp) run 90 miles an hour last weekend in a thousand feet with small v6. He's been driving that boat for many years so he knows what the limits are.....I personally would never want to do 90 in a vandal. Lol. They are a great boat no doubt....

Good friend had one with a 140 IL-6 merc. Ran hi 60's and was a blast to drive. Very stable for 14' boat.

Ours ran 60 with only 90 hp. Getting rebuilt now by my son. Unless it is a competition model (comp) it has core. Comps have, I believe, more stringers and no floor. Good bet that it needs a recore and new transom if it has core. Matt is putting big knees against the transom to support more power. His rebuild thread is in the fiberglass section.

Okay cool, thanks for the replies guys. Its a normal production hull from what i can tell. We did the tap test today and the core is definitely gone. That being said the boat is still quite light, im not a huge guy and i can lift the transom and its waterlogged. The boat needs a full resto, but the hull is in good shape all things considered. I might start to tear it down, but my valero is alot closer to being finished.

Don 't know how to do links, but if you are doing a restoration here is Matt's presently stalled project. There are several equally detailed Hydrostream restoration threads as well.

Oh sweet, thanks for the link. Were currently mid way on a full resto on a valero, re did the core, transom, side stringers and dash so far. Still needs the floor and stringers, and to get the gel to shine again. So the vandal is going to sit for a short time while we get my valero and my cousins 15 check finished off. Im really loving the shape of the vandal, and my cousins not liking the fact ill be faster in a smaller boat lol

The core in ours is junk, i had just pulled the seriously rotten floor out (only about 20 minutes) and the layer of glass on top of the core wasnt stuck to the core. I opened up a small test hole and found some seriously rotten core. Looks like were in for another boat with a core job, but should be awesome in the end. Jon50 yours would fly with a 15" 200! My dads buddy suggested a v6 merc too, ill have what should be a 2.4 200 20" offshore i could slap on it after its run on my valero. Im looking at getting my boss to build me a nice 2.4, Ive got everything for the motor, but ive only got a blown bridgeport powerhead right now.

Got started on taking out the core today, the matte on top of the core had split along the top edge on the starboard side letting water into the core. Needless to say the core was very rotten, and came out fairly quick. How far does the core go under the dash? Ive got it out to the kickboard under the dash, does it run up as far under the deck as my valero does?

Yup. Sure does. Cut the airboxnand footrest out and you'll see clearly where it is and isn't.

Okay cool, thanks for the help. It appeared to continue farther up like my valero does. Going to try get the well cut out and get the transom out today, possibly the footrest to get at the rest of the core.
