    Bent Sportmaster Skeg

I have a very slight bent on my sportsmaster's skeg. Is this thing fixable? I know the cast aluminum shouldn't be ****ed with overmuch but is it really that bad? Its not a crazy bend or anything and doesn't seem to affect handling too much.

If it IS fixable, how would you go about it? Thanks for any info you can provide.

BTW, this is running on an STV with a promax 300

I have fixed several by having someone firmly hold a 2x4 end wise on the back side of the skeg slightly higher than the area to be moved/hit with a dead blow hammer. It is risky and while I haven't broken one, I know some have while trying to repair one. Some say heat should be used, I have not heated any I have worked on. Once hammered on and moved around it will never be as strong as new. At the speeds you are running it is questionable as to the safety of a repaired skeg. Your decision....

Yeah, its a bit on the risky side, I admit.

I also wanted to put a torque tab on it but that will just increase the force on the skeg, if I'm not mistaken... I may just have to leave it as is for the time being.

Does anyone remember those torque correction rubber band things? They were these huge rubber bands you tied to the motor and the stern to help with the torque... what were those called? Does anyone still make them?

If it is bent the cast aluminum on one side is stretched and on the other side it is kinked. Either way, when you stretch cast aluminum, it is not stable to use in a high stress situation. You are risking a spin out if it breaks if you are surfacing it. Replacing the case is only fix or run it like a fishing motor, Down in. Trying to bend it back will only make it less safe.
