Actually the wing section used on the Switzer WING was a CLARK Y which was not developed by NACA. The CLARK Y was one of the earliest good airfoils and was used on Lindburg's Spirit of St. Louis. The lower surface is essentially flat which makes it good for ground effect.

Foil Section for Switzer Wing
Just a little more background on the foil section used on the wooden Switzer Wings. About 10 years ago I contacted Bob Switzer regarding whether he had plans of the original wooden Wings. As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, he told me that they did not draw up any plans. The lines were lofted full scale on the shop floor. I asked him about the wing section shape and he told me it was a Clark Y. Wikipedia provides the following basic information on the Clark Y.: Clark Y is the name of a particular aerofoil profile, widely used in general purpose aircraft designs, and much studied in aerodynamics over the years. The profile was designed in 1922 by Virginius E. Clark. The airfoil has a thickness of 11.7 percent and is flat on the lower surface from 30 percent of chord back. The flat bottom simplifies angle measurements on propellers, and makes for easy construction of wings on a flat surface.
The Lockheed Vega is one example of the Clark Y used in practice. For many applications the Clark Y has been adequate; it gives reasonable overall performance in respect of its lift-to-drag ratio, and has gentle and relatively benign stall characteristics. But the flat lower surface is sub-optimal from an aerodynamic perspective, and it is rarely used in new designs. The Spirit of St. Louis used the Clark Y; the Piper Cub used the quite similar USA 35B.

Fujimo, from reading your previous posts, you clearly have a passion for outboard racing and performance, have been there and done that, and can share your insight and experiences from days gone by... this is what we hope you will do. Let's move on and put other thoughts aside. A friend of mine with a serious health issue recently wrote, "Being close to death has taught me how important it is to be a nice person. That's all people remember."

And I thought I was the only argumentative, controversial, curmudgeon like dingleberry.
Mark, being nice is not the only thing people remember about you, if you are a "Basty Nastard"!, folk will also remember!!
Me myself try to be a nice person, but sometimes it's very hard!

I didn't realize or think it could even happen but I spun out on a corner today at the outboard regatta held today at Leonardtown by the Southern Maryland boat club- I didn't roll or crash- has any of the wing drivers experienced this???

You are not the first, Ted!! The worst was at Galveston, when Jim Merten spun in front of Roy Reeves--the 21' Stylecraft went over the top of Jim and the Wing--
I have spun the 'Bird' twice---both times with memorable results---
The problem is entering the turn with too much speed (Too much air under the hull)
Those cute little fins that Rich has added should really help---
Glad there was no damage to you or the 'Thunderball'Last edited by GENE LANHAM; 08-09-2015 at 12:17 PM.
