Butch: In the other thread where the discussion was of the J class records, I had referenced those records as still
standing records for those classes in the 1968 record book. Not bad for some old "white" Merc's.
Something about that weekend in Florida? Chuck Mersereau won the 6 hour marathon that weekend, but I did
not see Jon Culver's name in the standings. But Jon ran in the Kilos and set the records. Was that the same
boat they drove or did Jon have a similar Power Cat to Chuck's ?

An interesting little fact about the first wing running the kilo after the six hour at Lake X. Jon Culver and John Bakos had a duel. Culver ran his PowerCat and Bakos drove the U1 Wing. It was a long day. We each got three tries on the kilo. My last run was spoiled by an officials boat where I almost blew over. No more runs for me. Culver and Bakos were running neck in neck, one would be faster than the other each run, high 70's. The PowerCat ended up fastest after three tries, but the good Lord stepped in and they were allowed to register again for three more runs each. A lot of work was going on, on set ups and props between runs. I think Culver was right there with the speed again until he blew over, and John clicked off a quick one, so the Wing was the fastest. Jimmy Sewares was very close to Culver also in his PowerCat. It was quite a fun freezing day. Ice in the bilge in the morning..

    Danny,

Jon drove a white PowerCat, not Chucks or Dave's. Jon may have co-driven with Dave, they were pretty close friends. Dave was such an ironman he may have run the race by himself. I was so busy I don't remember much about the race. But there were 96 boats start on the six mile course, and they were so spread out I was passing the tail end boats on the first lap. I started up front though, but couldn't keep up with the Jones Cat being driven by George Thompson as the start boat. There were a lot of cats running that race. I worked in the pits while Treasure drove. The pits were really spread out with all those boats, you just couldn't move around much.

I wanted to run that race so bad but I was a rookie fire fighter that year. I just couldn't risk getting hurt and not making my probation. I had a close one in the "Roaring 100" and figured I better not push my luck.
