Does anyone notice what is missing from Gene's wing?

Hi Gene - I always thought that 3M was a silent sponsor of the Hot Toddy and Red Bird. Nobody else on the planet advertised their product as much as you. " Still holding together at over 100 mph... 3M duct tape, the choice of champions."

Jock had this wing less than a year---but ran a lot of different engines---and race numbers----

    Gene:

I went out to Wisconsin in 1967 0r 8 looking for a wing. I was taken into one of the Merc warehouses and there were at least a dozen wings of various colors in the building. When I asked about their various pros and cons , I was told by one of my buddies at Mercury, that the "good, light ones" were already gone and those that remained were heavier and probably not as fast. Can you comment on this and also give us a sense of the performance differences between the various Diablos, Red Bird, Ernie's Black Coffin, Jan's "Flying Dutchman", and the west coast wings of Massey, Nordskog, etc? I would also be curious about how your boat compared to the earlier Wood versions (Skyway-Gulfwinds, etc)

Finally, how do we get you to OFF to perhaps take a ride in Miss Diablo?

    Warmest regards---
    20 Foot Switzer Wing 2 X S3000 (Dust'n the Wind II)
!6 foot Wood Eltro Vee (2X Merc 1500's) (Dust'n the Wind IV)
    15 foot Powercat 15C (2 X Merc 1500) (Dust'n the Wind III)
(Single engine boats are lacking something)

    Warmest regards---

    Lots of questions, Rich!!!

But the first thing I think of---nearly fifty years later---is my friend and mentor----I had so much help at the Lake, there is one person who made everything come together--

Gene.....did you notice much difference between salt and inland lakes- the wing felt like it handled differently in salt water in Leonardtown ,Maryland Regatta..................and .they have red duck tape now !!!

Hi Ted----I never noticed any difference in performance, even in the OS boat, but a lot of guys said their boats ran better at the Stadium than they did at the Lake. In aviation we have a fancy word, 'Density Altitude', that affects the performance of any engine or aerodynamic airfoil---I wonder what is the height above sea level (altitude) of the lakes you have been running on?

Maybe Jimboat can explain if or how the specific gravity affects the performance of a planing hull??

I always thought salt was faster, but I blew over both salt and lakes. Water skiing seemed very different to me.

Boy, you guys have a much better "feel" than I did.
I could never see any difference in performance in boat speed or water skiing between fresh and salt water.
Usually salt water locations had more chop and that would allow for good speeds.

PS I am getting bored with the wings and want to get back to the Miami murders!
I was from Miami and knew many of the people involved, but left the place in the late 60's and missed all the "fun"!

you can add a murder or 2 in to the wing thread if you want- but it was the first time I ran a wing in salt and it felt like it was hard to get air under the hull.... but it may have been a short course
