But to get the ultimate top speeds will also take some seat time. Pretty safe hull to learn on, seen a few people buy 21's and just think you get in and go fast. Helped a few at that old reunions gain 5-10 mph just with a driving lesson.

I have had both XR2001 and SS2000 both run well in slop with input. My 21 Cougar with a 300XS I could make a sandwich at 100. Cougars are very easy to drive, but they don't turn very well.

David makes a very good point. i bought my GS with a 225. i could afford to buy her with any power i wanted at the time. i thought it would be enough. it was for a while but not any more. im wide open all the time now. i wouldnt buy another boat without thinking about what power to put on again. i would always buy the biggest badest motor you can afford. You will wish you had and especially on a very user friendly boat like the Cougar. You could always but a 300xs with DBR mods on your checkmate also? Then you have a 100 mph checkmate. Probably cheaper than a another boat and motor?

My problem is that I love the 225 PM. I'd like to run cougar on the Mississippi around Lacrosse, that can be rough water until you get away from town. I found that the checkmate has some wood issues that need to be worked on. So its looking like I'll be using dads old maxum for the summer

I think a 225 PM would be more fun on an Ally than on a 21 Cougar. Although there might be faster top end boats for the PM than the Ally, it would be up there, and it would be quick.

Do 21 Cougars have a hop speed range? That's a boat I always sort of wanted, but of course I can't buy everything I like.

With the 21 mtr you couldn't ask for a better ride. Or a better built boat just go to there web sit and read the articles. We've had our's in the low 90's and it is a breeze to drive

225 Pro Max will do it no problem. Seen one run 92 at 1400' with a bone stock 1999. Think it had a 30 labbed ET.

What? That makes no sense, the only 21 I ever saw do less than 90 had a 2.4 220 hp on it and still did 88 at 2700'.

Hate to tell you but those number add up to more like 12% slip, you ever try a stock Chopper or a labbed ET?

Bill Smith was running 114 in his Cougar 21 with a stock 280. The War Canoe Boys just bought it and are putting Motorheads DBR 15" 300xs on it. Can't wait to see what it will run.

My mistake Dave prop was 24/25 hydro we played with so many props that day didn't know what we had on Rpms where 7200 speed was 87 but we were afraid to raise motor any higher. Water was to smooth to really pack air

What do you have for a setback plate and jack plate set back?
