merc 245 carb smoky rich bottom end

1993 245 carb bottom is pig rich especially when warm 80 degree out
upon start up I have a cloud and when accelerating another cloud , then cleans up mid and top ,stock jetting
carbon reeds ,stock crossdrilled intake ,timing where its suppose to be idle and such
these are old engines are easy to work on but its starting to really bug me ,if I was loaded I have efi on them
I,m just a normal boat rodder looking for some light ,thanks

Check fuel pressure, then take look down the carb throats at idle and see if a needle and seat are leaking.

Might be time for good cleaning with new needle and seats and gaskets.

1/4 turn from seated seems along way in to me. If I remember 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated is the base setting.
    What altitude you run at?

typically the larger the number, the larger the jet. Did you mean you went from a 52 to a 50?

went to pelican lake race the engines ran way better ,I figured what I had on the Daytona would work on the twister ,Fuel Pump switches ,I used to shut off pumps to relieve carb pressure 5 or so seconds before I turn key off
and would start up mostly smoke free and clean getaway ,somewhere in the carb they are leaking fuel for few minutes till pressure drops I,m suspecting needles /seats but I changed them in may 2015 so for now pull switches going in hooked to tether shutoff ,looking this winter at wh carbs with split floats
