Yep, older than dirt almost. But not as old as Gene! I just never got a program at the race, or a newspaper clipping. But it was in Oct 1967. I have been all over the internet looking for the date but can't do any better than that. The reason we went was to see a fiberglass Wing run. I had never seen one, only the wood Wings. He was only a flash in the pan though.

All the wings were a flash in the pan Butch, lol. If I recall, at the Annual Salton Sea 500 National Championship Boat Race, qualifying heats started on Friday the 6th of October. And continued on the 7th & 8th, Saturday & Sunday. Unlimited Inboards and Outboards all raced. Robert(Bob) Anderson was the go-to guy organizing the races there. The Salton Sea races were considered a "Special Event" race, included in the years usual Regions 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, & 12 sanctioned races. These, of course, with the years Offshore Power Boat Races...in Keywest, Miami to Nassau, etc.

Since the Salton Sea events started, it was all about the California crowd, competitors & enthusiasts both. It wasn't until the later 60's that midwesterners began attending(for the most part) and competing. Nice 1962 article.

This clip is of Bob Morenz in the Mr. Powercat bubble cat running at Salton Sea 500. I have not been able to confirm the year but I believe it is 1964. I have been searching for more Salton Sea 500 information and came across this clip in a promo film from back then where they were selling property at Salton Sea as the future "American Riviera" in the desert.
