Gell for the deck, maybe 1.5 gal. You end up sanding some back off. Hull about 3 gals. I have found with gell that if you shoot a pre-finish coat (like a primer) then guide coat and then sand it (320 grit) and re-spray a thinner finish coat the finish is more uniform and less chance of break thru on the cut and buff phase since all that's needed is 1000 grit paper before buff. Repairs are looking good. Using a pc of straight alum, or steel, put one 8' fwd on the keel and one at the stern. Level them and the boat out. Pull some strings, or use a cheap laser to check the hull side to side. Bottom shape is important, but side to side differences will make the boat do the china wok. Especially in the last 4' of the pad.

I will have to turn the boat over again to finish sanding a few spots on the bottom before gel. I will take some pictures then. I am pretty confident in how flat and even it is side to side. The bottom took an entire damn summer to get squared away. Running a straight edge across the pad everything is about +/- 1mm or better so I think that will do. At least I hope so, because I am sick of working the bottom of the boat.
I figured 5 gal was enough based on my math, just wanted to double check.

I will get some decent pictures taken next time I'm at the shop.

Now for the hard part. Deciding on a color(s)

I'll finally be picking up some gelcoat. Only about 2 years late......
    A few questions.
I hadn't planned on using Duratec. Mistake? Or just give er and do more sanding? I'll be spraying from a 2.5mm HVLP gun.
    Polishing compounds? Aqua Buff? Or?
This will be the first time I spray gel. Spray schedule? 1 heavy layer, sand, top layer? 2 coats then sand? Wax or PVA?

?Well finally got my boat gel coated. The learning curve was more or less a vertical wall I feel. By the time I was done I think I was getting a very basic handle of it.
I used the the Duratec additive, my first impression was that it was an epic waste of my time and money. I had a ton of orange peel and it still didn't seem t kick off properly. Like it never sealed the gel from the air. After 1.5 days I still couldn't sand it. It would clog the paper almost instantly. I got mad and went and bought some PVA and sprayed the boat then moved it out into the sun. I was able to start sanding a few hours later as long as I kept the paper flooded with water. Once the initial sand was done I had no problem dry sanding after that? Gel coat new guy.
After way too much sanding and polishing I was able to reinstall my bow and transom eyes. (More on the bow eye later) and turn the boat over and start to finish up the body work on the deck. I got the body work on the deck done and started to shoot the grey. It went much better. I turned the air pressure down to around 25-30psi from 40-45 psi at the gun and started laying heavier/wetter coats of gel. (HVLP 2.3mm tip)
I then re taped and started to spray the orange..... Really wish I listened more closely to the guys at Composites Canada when they recommended I chose a different color. It was a pain. It didn't hide very well at all. I have almost as much orange on the boat as the entire rest of the grey. I had to go back and get an extra gallon, after I started sanding I could just see some faint outlines of body filler. I should have sprayed teh entire boat grey then done orange on top I think.....
I then ran out of time (summer vacation, working on boat at brother's house) and towed the boat home, I have sanded out the grey on the deck and it's ready for compounds. I still need to sand the orange before I do that though.
Here are some pictures I hope work, now that photobucket has kicked everyone to the curb.

I QUIT WITH IMAGE HOSTING BS

Some repairs due to the PO

    After gel

I bet that caused some of my fish eyes (borrowed compressor)

After compound/wax (can see a small spot I sanded through like a jerk)

Lots of spider cracks, covered in a layer of glass

My brother trying to help me decide how to lay out the colors

After the first attempt at orange.

Back in for a second helping of orange

    hey canuckr, looking good.
Ya this photobucket crap has ruined tonnes of threads here and over on hydrostreamforums....I actually had to download all your pictures and re-host them on my server, and then fix your 79 Vector rebuild thread just to get the images to show. Real pain in the butt.

A few more pictures, finally got a chance to sand and polish the deck. I have the windshield mocked up. Just need to epoxy in a few threaded bungs where the wind shield frame meets the hull. Do that this weekend.
