We had a 64 75 Starfilte on a 15' SeaStar when I was a kid. Great ski boat back in the day. It was a little over rated for the 75. Had lots of fun with it.

    Hi Mike, how are you!
Those classic outboards had so much character. I just can't get enough of them, even when I was little, I obsessed over outboards. It seems that back then a lot more emphasis was placed on the aesthetics and OMC and Mercury were really pushing the boundaries hard not only in design, but technology. It's interesting how the outboard engine catalogs were a pretty big production back then and even the catalogs were very creative.

I wonder if anybody here has a boat with that outboard powerhead stern drive. Anybody see one of those? If I recall, it was a V4 powerhead laid down on its side mated to a stern drive unit. Extremely odd setup.

    Greg

I worked on a few of them back then when I worked at a dealer. yup laid down on its side. Merc did almost the same with the "L" drive.

Yes, it is! It was a barn find 9 years ago that was sitting in someones basement for a bunch of years, like 30+.
I bought it for my 62 Lone Star.

I had a '1960 version of the same motor.
    paid $75. for it.
seller was a Merc guy and it came on a boat he just bought.
He took it to his Merc dealer who tore it apart and told him it was junk.
I bought it in box's, took it home and bolted it Back together w/0 replacing a single part
and skied w/it the same day! Loved that motor.
blew a tire one night on way back from skiing w/no spare.
let it sit on side of road and went back in morning. Cables were all cut and motor was gone
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Gary, sounds like a great motor and deal you got!!!....
Sucks that someone stole it though.....
I still have this one stored never did install it decided to install the newer motor thinking it would be a bit more user friendly.

    Now that's cool!

I'm still shopping for a pair of '50's era 2 banger OMC's for my old tin boat and not seeing much. Had an epiphany last night and thought, how about later era 15" 50's w/power trim and mod a pair of old 35 HP cowlings to fit
Way too much power for that boat though.
I'll keep watching for the oldies. Probably a yr away from putzing w/it anyhow. Have collected enough parts to build period correct twin controls and found one prop available w/max pitch.

Greg, how in the world can you say that with the incredible leap in aesthetics from the new Evinrudes?

That is very cool. I've seen the video of this run and it's spectacular. That is a very impressive accomplishment even by today's performance standards.
