1983 Merc 2.0 Black Max help

The right cylinger head if you are standing behind the transom, the temp (?) senor near the top of the head.. Where is that wire coming off the temp sensor supposed to land?

What should my cylinders PSI be with a compression tester?

The boat instantly fires and idles, but the bendix on the starter is being flaky, we have to help it engage with a flat screwdriver.. Any suggestions?

We are going on the maiden voyage Monday, what is peak RPM for this motor?, what RPM is my goal to verify the hull/ motor is set up close to properly?

    Thank you

A lite lubricant may help that drive gear engage. Sometimes they stick.

'83 should be tha good one Bobby...

should be a small plastic term block mounted to tha block above tha "lectrics plate... should have a matchin' wire on it comin' outta tha harness... terms under same screw with that wire....

    115 plus...known good gauge.

hot battery, good connections. coupla drops a machine oil.. still acts up, replace

depends on motor health, load, boat, offset, prop... everything just right, 5800.......jmo

    Dang, sorry about that.

My first (and only) bass boat has an XR4 on it. 2.4L block, same skinny high geared LU. Was owned by a user that trusted his "certified" mechanic for everything. When I got done wiping out the bugs that idiot put in it, and tuned it up, I had to go buy a steeper prop for it. The original prop is now the power prop for water skiing.

Last year was a bummer. Only burned about 15 gallons of fuel with it. Got rusty as heck and a year older. Vowed that wouldn't happen this year. Took the DW bass fishing last weekend and durn near hooked it. Wound up with her in my lap. Not near as happy as she was when I did that with the pickup truck 45 years ago.

Dang thing's still kinda wild. Gotta pay attention to what I'm doing when driving it.

Don't know what the motor's producing, but it's a ways north of 150 for sure.

Keep looking, they're out there. You might look for a bit later boat, though. These old ones have a lot of wood in them, and it can get expensive in materials and time to fix em. Most of them went to all composites in the late 90's, and they are a bit easier to keep seaworthy. Also the XR2 and XR4 motors have the 4" LU on them. It's skinny and slippery, but not forgiving. If you make a big mistake, like slam shifting it, or get lax on maintenance and lube or clearances get out of spec, it'll reward ya with a pinion out the side. 4.5" LU bolts right up, though, so you just lose a bit of fun factor. I've had no trouble with mine other than I had to go through it and fix all the mistakes above said "mechanic" made. Replaced crumpled seals, spalled bearings and set clearances right. I caught it before gears got spalled.
To fish or not to fish? What a STUPID question.
