Thank you, lots of good info rolling in now. exactly what I was hoping for. I do plan on having an Evinrude Mechanic set it up for me. I will heed all of your advise and set timing to 18. I will check compression and run top fuel available with what ever the mechanic tells me for oil ration. thanks again. keep info coming if anyone thinks of anything else. I'll keep you all posted.

Sam Jenkins built the motor and set timing at 17 degrees. Is it your opinion it will go poof?

The motor that this thread is about?
The one built by the guy that told him the timing was set at 31* ?

    What'd I miss?

Cuda, that was in the crossflow days.

Second effort only verified that the heads were at blueprint spec and if not were machined to those specs. on the looper 6's. On 88-92 you could get a lighter weight cowl.

Yeah we could only use OMC parts back then so we bolted down a head on a Bridgeport, welded the pocket up then machined, and cc the pocket ... what a lot of work to get higher compression ...

OMG Al you moved to FLORIDA ???? Low taxes ?

Thank you, I know I have an up hill run here but I'm going to do everything I can to get this motor right and healthy. As I get deeper into it i'm sure i'll have many questions...your experience and knowledge will not go to waste. I follow instructions very well, just need the instructions. Thanks

Dreamer, check the compression and check back. We can advise on fuel. If the motor has the vro oil injection and was just rebuilt you will need to run the oil injection PLUS mix 50-1 in the fuel tank for break in. 10-20 hours. Idle for 5-10 mins then plane off and run as slow as possible without plowing for 1 hour then you can bump it up 1000 rpm or less every hour with full throttle for a few seconds, vary the throttle do not run at one constant rpm. Also you should re torque the heads after first start up and after first hour then after 20 hrs.

    How does it run?

Thank you, great info. Oil injection has been removed so do I run 25/1 during break in?

yep 25-1 in the tank then. Watch your elect fuel pump pressure with that motor 5-6 psi max, and it needs to hold that when running. Run a water separating fuel filter before the pump and keep the pump as close to the fuel tank and low as possible.

If you have the funds run a fuel pressure gauge in the dash, best thing I ever did, no more wondering about fuel pressure and no more blown powerheads from low fuel pressure. Most important with a large fuel tank when the fuel slides away from pickup.

Thank you, I will do all I can to follow the instructions I'm getting from you guys with $$ as my only barrier. This info makes real sense.

The Evinrude Vindicator / Johnson Venom was a nominally 225 hp 3 liter engine that was around in the mid nineties, long after Second Effort had been shut down.

It may well have put out 240 hp.

The pictures look more like late nineties cowlings, though.

There were a number of issues with mid/late nineties V6 OMCs, including crank end caps that were not correctly fastened and jetting that was too lean in the mid-range, both resulting in certain death. You need to find someone who really knows that stuff to make sure those things have been fixed.

hello dreamer . just some info for you. second effort closed there doors in the late 80's
    .

the timing for you engine from the factory is set at 18 degrees. some people run less timing because of poor fuel quality or if the engine is modified with a higher compression ratio . but from the factory it is set at 18 degrees.

the first thing that I would do is by a factory manual for you engine . not a aftermarket manual a original factory manual you can also down load them off the internet. or buy a good used on for 30-40 bucks. this will help you with a lot of your questions

the people that have commented on this thread have given great info listen to what is being said . have fun and good luck.

Thanks again to all. history of the motor having now talked to the retired mechanic who did re-build. Motor took a swim about 3 years ago when the STV? dug in and the boats hull was damaged. the motor was quickly pickled, torn down and all internal replaced. According to mechanic the motor had about 200 hours on it when this happened. It is a 93 but the cowling was lost in the event. The Johnson cowl is not original. He said it has the heads were ported, new pistons, rings, valves, valve seals everything was re-done. Sounds like a knowledgeable and honest man. Mid section was replaced with new 20" and a low water Bobs lower unit replaced as well. He says change water pump and lower unit gear lube and "light as he put it. then break in as new. Sounds very confident in his re-build. The mechanic is/was a certified OMC mechanic who had worked for Rybovich and lives on the Florida keys, now retired. He says the motor as it sits now should put out between 250 and 270 HP. Says it's strong and re-built right. I believe him. I was supposed to pick it up 2 weeks ago but owner has had life events delay pick up. Going to get it on the 21st and then get going with rigging etc.
