1993 Evinrude 240HP Second Effort Team

I just purchased a freshly re-built 1993 Evinrude 240 HP Second Effort Team outboard. It have been completely rebuilt with 0 hours. At the time of re-build it had a 20" mid section added.
Can anyone enlighten me as to what I have? Owner says it needs a complete break in as a new motor. Timing is set at 31 degree the owner said it operated best before the rebuild. range is 24-31. Haven't even started it yet. looking any and all information or places I can look to get info. Will go on my 22' Velocity.
Is it a warmed up 225? how many liter? Owner says it now should put out between 250HP and 270HP? Prop suggestions?
    I'll put up pictures soon.

    Thank you!

30 degrees of timing is too much. Book is 18* set under load at 5000rpm

Previous owner said it was a dog with timing set at 24...said it screamed at 31. Says specs say 24-31. 18 seems very low compared to what the owner said but who knows...keep throwing out info, I'm listening!

Kevin is right if you don't lower the timing to 18 you will be rebuilding soon. If it is a dog with the timing set right you have problems else where.

Ok, Good to know. It has actually never need run since re-build, Has 0 hours on it. I'll set it at 18 and see how it runs. I would imagine a good Evinrude/Johnson mechanic could add some insight as well. Not that you guys aren't, you may be mechanics yourselves, just saying it's not something I will do myself at this point. Regarding the 1993 Vindicator's can you tell me anything about those motors? how many liters? is it a 225 warmed up? Seller said it was a 240HP is that correct?

Why settle for "good"? Some of the best have already replied to your post.

I kind of doubt your typical factory trained "stock application" mechanic would know much about what you have. I do know that my ported looper, running more hp than you are talking, was set by the builder at 17 degrees.

I'd pull the heads to see what's up first. Break it in with 31 ??? I'm scared.

We just put a carb 3.3 on Yamaha I set it at a mild 15-16 till we nail jetting down. Guys that know more then most have told me Timing too low causes more heat.

im not even sure you can get 30+ degrees out of an Omc ignition. You can't get it out of yamaha without making mods to the timer base

I pick the motor up on the 24th. This is what the add said - 1993 Vindicator Evinrude 240 HP made by the original Second Effort Team, Completely Overhauled by a certified mechanic, Has not been run since overhaul. Everything in it brand New in the engine! Did 98 MPH by GPS on a STV! Comes with a 29" Pitch CRX redone by DAH! (Prop would cost you over $800). Brand New Lower Unit. Short Shaft! 30" Very responsive! Low water pick up. Conversation with previous owner lead to the 31 degree timing. Can't upload the one pic I have. trying to get some knowledge about it in the mean time.
I'm sure many of the folks replying are "The Best" It's just I'm not.

These Team Second Effort's , are they 225's? Still looking for what I really have. Does anyone know about this specific motor? Not just this one but a Team Second Effort 240HP? Liters? Modifications made to what base motor? that kind of info.
