Do I need hydraulic steering or regular?
I just finished rebuilding my merc. 225. I am putting it on a 20' boat. Because the boat is new to me I was wondering if I will be able to steer effectively with a new no feed-back system or will I need to go with a Sea Star system?

Depends on what boat it is, if it's a heavy fish boat you won't see more than 40 mph out of, then yes, a cable steer is fine, but anything that will be fast then hydraulic is the way to go............

Had a used NFB cable steering helm and cables on my 24' boat for 6 years. Till one cable got stiff and chucked a gear in the helm.

My general rule is that any boat capable of over 65 MPH should have hydraulic steering. I have a Latham side ram / wing plate system on my modified Mercury 200 that runs 77 MPH on my Progression 22 and would never go back to cable steering.

I prefer hydraulic over cable simply because with hydraulic, there is no cable to rust up and seize........
