A pinnacle year for OMC - the first production V6 outboard.

I have the same Catalog. I had a 1976 Johnson 200 on a Hydrostream Vector. A great pkg. Back then.

That 70 brings a tear to my eye as it was one of the early engines I fell in love with. Grand Daddy bought a brand new Ranger (yellow) with that engine.

Who else remembers the additional skeg on the 40'horse?

I remember seeing one of those commercial 40s on a Boston Whaler when I was like 15 years old and noticing the odd skeg. I assume it was mainly to protect the propeller from underwater obstructions? If I'm correct that lower unit is a two-piece design, which would make that modification easy for production. That was a very large 40, and it's interesting that it's essentially the very same outboard platform that OMC had been using for their large twins since the 1950s. Must have been a very reliable design. I know they kept that old 40 design for their commercial series for some years after removing it from the consumer lineup for the new 35.

I used to collect those catalogs at boat shows when I was a kid. Probably had that one.

76 had to be the worst color ever!

Nah, the year when they had the charcoal black mid and white cowlings does it for me.

What made the Javelin different than the standard 85? My neighbors had one on a 15' open-bow Glastron tri-hull when I was a kid.

Funny how those graphics would later be adopted the whole line.

I've always felt that the 1980 Johnson graphics were the very best ever, which is very similar to the Stinger graphics in the above catalog. I never particularly liked the standard 1976 colors as much, even though dark olive green was used several times in the Johnson lineup, I never liked it. That 75 Stinger looks awesome though! And I absolutely love the all-orange Stingers - so awesome. I've always felt that the three-cylinder OMC looper was one of the greatest outboard designs of all time.

That Larson with the twin 55s is pretty cool - you don't see that kind of configuration often. That boat must plane like a beast, too.

    I have many more coming!
