Opinions on BayStar Steering for Blackmax 150?
I'm running an '85 150 Black Max 20'' shaft on a large fish and ski with a 25'' transom. I use a 9'' static setback plate to make the motor work with my transom. One of the downsides to this is that it puts my steering cable in a bind and makes the steering require more effort. I noticed that seastar model does not fit my motor, only 2.4/2.5 EFI models. The baystar however does fit my '85. However, a 150hp motor is at the top of the range for the baystar application. The seastar site says not to use baystar steering for high performance 150's. I'm wondering if the baystar steering is worth a try, or if it will be close to undersized for my motor.

Even do the Baystar is a bit under rated and should work for you I would strongly suggest just by looking at the size of your boat spending a few more $'s and get the next size....Steering is not something you want to fool with....JMPO.

IMO I dont see what the issue would be as the Bay Star is good up to 60 MPH and 150 HP MAX. Only thing to consider is if the engine goes and you want to replace with a 200 or what ever then your screwed. The correct part number for the Bay Star application you need is http://www.foreandaftmarine.com/1-BAYSTAR.htm
BayStar Steering Kit (HK4200A) Includes:
• 1 x BayStar TILT helm pump (HH43143)
• 1 x BayStar Cylinder (HC4645H3)
• 1 x BayStar Tubing kit (HT4420H, 2 x 20′ hoses)
• 2 x Hydraulic Steering Fluid (HA5430)
• 1 x Filler Kit (HA5438)
Now if you go ahead and spend the Xtra $ and get the Sea Star Pro system. You're good for 300 HP and speeds over 60 MPH.Bud Conner "Heathen" "Defending Our Constitution"

I would love to run the sea star model, but according to the application chart, it will not fit. It only fits the 2.4 and 2.5 motors, and the * says that it may require extensive front cowl modifications. I agree that I need to decide if I'm going to stick with this motor long term before spending the money on hydro steering. I've only been able to take the boat out one time so far with this motor on it.

No kidding? That would be great. I wonder why the fitment chart doesn't list it.

Agree with the guys here. I just put the Baystar on a 115 4S Merc. I wish I had gone ahead with the SeaStar. The Baystar is OK but it requires more muscle than the Seastar that I have on other boats. I rolled the dice and this is what I found from first hand experience... I have so much torque steer that I have literally seen the wheel turn right from the pressure. High motor hight and lots of trim on this flats boat.

Ok, it sounds like baystar is a no-go. I'll take a look at Tom's photos.
