trim ram ?
On the single ram merc v6 trim unit, whats the best way to get the top shaft out of the ram. the shaft that goes thru the ram that it pivots on. Do you gain access to it by the two covers on each side of the swivel bracket, like the ones that cover the lower pivot shafts. You have to knock the retaining pin out of the upper shaft first, correct?

You hit the pin with a drift and a big hammer. It will shear the trilube pin.

What about the shaft it pivots on,how do u remove it? You use a 5/16 bolt to get the two lower shafts out, but what about the upper shaft. After u knock the pin out, does the shaft just slide out sideways? Or am I missing something?

THANKX VNEMOUS, I found pics of the 3 ram system but not the single. Ok, looking at the pic of the ram, #38 looks like a bolt going thru a "sleeve" #35 with a nut at the end, with the pin#41 going thru both. On my system I took off the upper plastic side covers on each side of the clamp bracket and I see a shaft on each side with "screw driver type slots" cut into the shaft on each end. I can turn these with a screw driver but they dont do anything else, just turn. The shaft looks different than #38 in the diagram, also if the shaft had #41 pin going thru it they wouldnt turn.
Any ideas on getting this shaft out? Thanks, Garygarybvd

There is a small retainer pin that you have to push out of that large pin(its right in the middle of that large pin) once that small pin is out you can slide the larger pin out the side. part number 41 is not there?

My bolt (#38) came out but I damage it. Now removal and lub is part of my yearly maintenance. Before you start hitting it with a very large hammer look-up the price for a new one.

Item number 37 has a threaded hole make a tool to screw in that hole with a long piece of all thread and get a piece of pipe that is bigger than the pin use a washer and tighten the all thread and pull the pin

I lightly tapped on the upper shaft and it seems like it will come out very easily. there was no #41 pin in the middle to tap out. Have to run, will type more later.

Well I got the trim ram out of the clamp bracket. The 3 pivot pins came out easily. The top pin is broke in half. a previous person must have beat the retaining pin out and broke the pivot pin in half. Its worked this way for a long time. LOL. Im assuming the one end unscrews off the rod where the valve body is so I can get at the seals and clean the springs, balls, and valve body

should put it back in to crack the spanner nut loose, a vise may not be solid enough of a hold to do it without marring up the cylinder

Flabum, Ive got the spanner cover nut off and the piston out, Does the bottom end of the "piston" just unscrew so I can slide the parts off and replace the seals?

Any body know if the bolt on the end of the piston unscrews so the parts can slide off. It turns about 1/2" then seems to bind up.
